Macias was his idol, there's no denying his popularity. However, when El Raton lost the title to Alphonse Halimi, the entire country was in mourning, Becerra himself. He lost on that very same card by 4th round TKO to Dwight Hawkins, mainly due to the grief he felt at Macias's loss. When Mexico was looking for a new champion, they turned to Becerra, who immediately rebounded from his loss and got back on track, stopping Hawkins and many others en route to a title shot.

It was here where his popularity reached unprecedented levels, as he was faced with the prospect of defeating his idol's (and the idol of the city of Mexico's) conqueror. He carried the weight of the entire nation on his back with the fight against Halimi, and he responded in grand fashion in front of a crowd of 15,000. That number pales in comparison to what was said to have gone on outside of the ring that night after the city got word of what had happened.

The rematch drew twice the crowd, and the reaction from the Mexican people was no less when Becerra knocked him out again to retain the title. According to all of my sources, including the words of Nat Fleischer, never had there been a Mexican fighter whose popularity had reached such epic proportions at the time Becerra was champ.

Well i never denied Becerras popularity but I personally know many old time Mexican Fans who talk more about Raton. But hey you have to admit that your clue described both guys. I just figured Macias, since He was the first true idol of Mexican boxing, there were others before him like Arizmendi and Kid Azteca but not as loved as Macias.
The first time i was confused and picked Castillo cause you said 20 years before chavez, I was assuming 20 years before Chavez truly blew up to hero status. but i see that you meant the end of becerras reign was 20 years before Chavez even turned Pro. I guess Macias was 20 to 25 years before also.

Ok another question Who is the Original Golden Boy who didnt care much for Oscar Delahoya.

He was once asked about Oscar carrying his name he responded
Hes not the Golden Boy! "The real Golden boy is a killer by the name of Danny Romero".:lol: This fighter was popular in the Hollywood Golden Age hanging out with a whos who of Hollywood stars. Also known for his dry humor in his old age even once pissed off Ken Norton real bad in a live interview:lol:

With respect, I think Kid Azteca and Ricardo "Baby" Arizmendi were just as popular in their day.

Yeah, they fought in generally the same era, Macias reaching idol status a bit prior, though. I think it was Becerra's conquering of Raton's conqueror that really put him over the edge at the time. I actually prefer El Raton as a fighter. Excellent boxer-puncher. I have a few DVD's of him in his prime. His disection of Thai fighter Chamroen Songkitrat is probably my favorite, if only because it was the first time I ever saw him in full. Great performance that one.

:nono No they werent. Macias is widely known as the first hero of Mexico. Although They were greater fighters than Macias they didnt surpass him in popularity. Arizmendi fought most of his fights in California and around other parts of the US only occasionly fighting in Mexico. Azteca only fought in Mexico in the begining and the end. When he was in his prime he fought mostly in the US and South America.

Macias on the other hand was an olympic hero for his country and had almost all his fights in Mexico, also was well managed and promoted by George Parnassus who was well known to buils his fighters up. These are many of the reasons why Macias was much more popular than those 2 and is widely known as Mexicos first true Boxing Idol.

Correct :good I met him before he passed away he was a charachter as an old man too. I heard in an interview with a bunch of fighters that he kept interrupting Ken Norton and was purposedly messing with him for some reason, and Ken Norton got really pissed saying something about hitting aragon with a bat:lol: He was a well known bail bondsmen on the west Coast always known for a good quote. I hear the only reason Ken Norton didnt get crazy with Aragon was cause he was like 70years old at the time:lol:

AN old timer friend of mine told me that back in the 40s or 50s some big huge guy was trying to start a fight with old time comedian Milton Berle and shoved Berle thru the Bathroom stall where Aragon was sittin. Aragon then gets in the big guys face and the guy not knowing who Aragon was gets beligerant with him telling him if he wants some, well then i heard that Aragon preceded to beat the living daylights out this Chump real bad:lol:

Also when asked if he would want a rematch with Carmen Basillio Aragon responded sure if you let me take 45. in the ring .
