I always admired Ricardo Mayorga's defensive prowess.

    Nicely played!

Look at Willie Pep, Floyd Mayweather, James Toney, Pernell Whitaker to start. If you are truly a newbie Cuban Linx, don't copy anyone. Learn the basics first.

Indeed but you can study fighters who have mastered the basics as well. These tend to be Eastern European fighters, I would look at Pirog if I were you Cuban Links, good couple of albums by the way.

Telling noobs to watch guys like Whitaker, Pep, Mayweather, Toney etc is silly. They're just gonna get nailed trying to practice the crazy hands down head movement, or rolling punches off their shoulders etc

You have to learn the basics of keeping your hands and up and just blocking like that first, then move into catches, parries etc, then slips/rolls. Footwork and taking a step back/to the side should be in there somewhere in there early too.

Only after you get the hang of all those can you go into shoulder rolls, fighting with your hands down and relying on just your head movement. And even then, if you aren't gifted with great reflexed and athleticism you're gonna get killed lol. That's why only a hand ful of fighters can get away with it.

For pure technical boxing, ricardo lopez. All based off of technique, not athletic ability

Watch any high level amateurs...world level.

Those fights end with scores of like 1-3. Someone's playing some defense up in there.

And you're going to fight in the pros like you do in the amateurs? Maybe it's just me, but why pick up bad habits for something that won't matter once you go pro

first guy i watched and did not at all intimidate or discourage me. if a huge bloke like that can be so fast we all can. just hard work. no heavyweight has natural skills like that.

You're wrong there, very wrong. Watching amatuers is great. Some guys who keep their hands low maybe not so much, but there are other guys too who keep their hands tight and are good, tight defence boxers. Lomachenko is a great example.
