I think the reason Eddie Machen is so frequently omitted from these lists is because of his pairing with Ernie Terrell for the WBA HW Title that had inappropriately been stripped from Ali. Secondly, he did lost a WBA Tournament eliminator against Thad Spencer the second time the championship was stripped from Ali. As good as he was, he did come up short whenever an opportunity presented itself.

Something frequently overlooked about Hagler's MW reign, is that Caveman Lee was the only challenger he had who was a recognized stiff going in. (Mickey Goodwin, Marv's originally scheduled opponent was expected to put up more of an effort. Everybody knew that Lee had exciting matches, but wouldn't last beyond round one with Hagler, and Cosell accurately savaged the matchup in a stinging editorial immediately before Lee was sacrificed.)

A great many excellent contenders during Hagler and Monzon's time at the top weren't even good enough to qualify for title shots. John Collins, Curtis Parker, Dwight Davison, James "Hard Rock" Green, Frank "The Animal" Fletcher, Ernie Singletary, Tony Braxton, Alex Ramos (who finally did close out his career with a WBA MW Title shot 14 years after turning professional, against future Duran victim Jorge Castro-by that time, Duran still had hands of stone by virtue of becoming petrified), Mark Holmes (Larry's little brother was a very good middleweight), Boogaloo Watts, Cyclone Hart, Sugar Ray Seales, Elijah "Tap Tap" Makathini, Mike Colbert, Willie "The Worm" Monroe, and a slew of others around the world, many who enjoyed substantial televised exposure. Today, most of these contenders would become alphabet champions.
