Who are some young fighters/prospects who stepped up too soon?

Vargas. Have no idea what his people were thinking putting him in with Tito at that time. He never recovered from that .

Shawn O'Sullivan. 1984 Olympic Silver Medalist. 94-6 amateur. 1981 and 1983 World Amateur Champion. Shawn's braintrust (Sugar Ray Leonard and adviser Mike Trainer), thought a suitable opponent for Shawn's 12th pro bout should be Simon Brown. 3 1/2 one sided rounds later he is no longer undefeated. After 3 rebuilding type fights they match him with Luis Santana, a big welter and future super-welterweight champ who physically manhandles Shawn and stops him in 10 rounds. The very next fight, they select Donovan Boucher who blasts out Shawn in 2 rounds and his career never really recovers after that. Donovan would go on to fight for the world title as well as win the Commonwealth title and make several defences. Another thing, Shawn had fought amateur at welterweight (152lbs.) since 1981 and really should not have been dropping to 147 as a fully grown man upon turning pro. Really poorly managed career and Shawn paid a big price as today he suffers from dementia and other ailments which is incredible considering he had only 28 pro fights.

This is where I think taking time could be of benefit. Consider Wilder is a world champion and not consistently fought at that level and had 30 fights before he fought Scott

throwing Tommy Morrison in with the undefeated and never hurt in a fight Ray Mercer after Morrison had just almost gotten KTFO by an unknown Russian Cab Driver in Yuri Vaulin was a big mistake... but his manager was IMO just trying to Milk all the $$$ out of Morrison's popularity before he got KTFO by a bum, after filming the Rocky V movie they threw Morrison in with Lorenzo Canady and Sylvester Stallone worked his corner, they expected a Highlite Reel KTFO they could use in editing the movie... Canady had been KTFO in 1 by Mike Tyson so they figured he'd be a Cake Walk for Morrison also... but Morrison struggled with Canady and nothing he hit him with seemed to faze him, I think this and the near disaster against Yuri Vaulin is why his manager decided to just throw him in with Ray Mercer for a decent quick payday before Morrison was to get KTFO by a Michael Bentt type bum with a crappy record!
