No, the Selbys were trained by Pat Mahoney at Splott Adventure ABC.

I don't believe in all this "best trainer" malarkey, as a trainer can only work with what he has - and even then there are many intangibles such as fighter/trainer chemistry etc, but all the guys mentioned so far are great trainers in their respective ways (especially Jimmy Tibbs & Billy Nelson), but one guy I haven't seen mentioned yet is Gary Lockett.

He's done a brilliant job with Gavin Rees, Bradley Pryce & Lewis Rees. You may not have seen the total face value yet of the results with Gavin & Bradley, but he has totally re-motivated those guys and they are now more dedicated and disciplined in their approach to training than they've ever been. Gary's reputation as a trainer is going to grow a lot in the coming years. He knows his stuff from all angles.

I didn't say he was a top trainer, Just said he deserves props for his work with Buckland and Selby.

Dan, What makes you say that about Beard? I don't rate what i've seen. You seen him at work?.

  9. I dare say Enzo Calzaghe ought to take credit for most of Cleverly's achievements, as does Nathan himself.

Vince hasn't actually improved Nathan at all, since the Oakey fight he just looks the same in terms of technical skill and tactics, he's just grown into the weight a bit more and as he's got older developed physically.

I'm not all that big on Enzo to be honest, but in terms of technique and tactical knowledge he's on a different planet. Sure, he had a gifted son who in terms of attributes suited him down to the ground, but he also did good work with Maccarinelli, Pryce, Rees and to a point Gary Lockett.

Agree with Dan about Lee Beard too, he trades on being Billy Graham's 2nd assistant, doing a couple of fights with Matt Hatton and being Floyd Sr's mate (another woeful trainer right there).

Compare Matt now under Bob Shannon (a pretty average to half decent trainer in all honesty) and the improvement is huge. He actually looks like a professional fighter that's capable against decent opponents, whereas against Watson he looked like a fish out of water.

Yeah i was never keen on Beard and if it's true that he was going behind Snr's back and thinking he could do the job with Ricky he ****ed that well and truly..

Seen him telling Harrison to circle to the right when getting picked apart by Frankie. Frankies a southpaw by the way. Only thing i've seen of him TBH but he didnt do himself no favours with Guzman, Hatton etc

:good Cheers, I think the whole 'i been in U.S' was his selling point. Only can go so far on that then people wanna see development. Sounds like he ain't got a clue going on that though .

  13. Circling to the right would be suicide against Gavin I feel, you open yourself up to his left hand much more and give him more room to work his right to the body too.

Considering, from what I've seen at least, Gavin tends to paw too much with his jab, he's not going to dominate you with it whereas his left is particularly strong.... I was surprised how hard he whacked with the left actually when I saw him on the pads with Arnie.

Most fighters that have done alright against him have circled to the left, I'm sure of it.... Woodhouse did certainly, Mutley just ran, and Lomax simply got pounded when he was in range either way.

It's amazing the amount of fighters who struggle to fight southpaws, It's not as easy as people think to just get foot on outside of lead foot but some i've seen haven't attempted it and haven't used the punches to exploit southpaw's.

If I was a pro boxer and could have any coach in Britain coaching me I would choose Adam Booth. I think he is capable of devising excellent strategies in fights, his fighters can adapt thei gameplan depending upon the opponent.

I get the feeling a lot of his training methods would be based on rigorous scientific research rather than just intuition and past experience. He has an excellent understanding of the human body and its mechanics.
