Qawi could bounce off your shot and throw something crazy back, he had a quality of your best punch just dinging off his armor.

    jack johnson.

i saw this thread a few days ago and jack seemed too obvious. days later i can't think of anyone better.

i guess toney is the best other pick, but most of the reason to say that happened at lower weights.

I submit that Povetkin was the best recent exponent of this sort of inside fighting at heavyweight. He got right into the face of the other guy and combined an arsenal of hooks and uppercuts with head movement, waist bending, parries and protecting the body with his arm. He also does the EE thing of bouncing back when the other guy throws a shot. Check it out:

The last bit hurts me but is sadly very true. I was watching Bowe-Holyfield 3 the other day and I couldn’t believe how impressive Holyfield’s first round of boxing and moving was. The footwork, jab, ring craft, countering, defense were just exceptional for a HW. I don’t think I’ve seen a more impressive ‘boxing’ round from a HW and that includes Ali and Holmes.

I would say James Toney, although he was not a great heavyweight
