There's probably an argument to be made that any boxer who fights professionally is elite or world-class, or that every beltholder is elite etc. But which boxers would you consider truly elite? Who would hold their own in any era? For example, in football (soccer) the list of legitimate "elite" teams would probably include Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, PSG, Manchester City, with shouts for Athletico Madrid and Liverpool. So - to get the ball rolling, Lomachenko is elite in the true sense of the word; Linares is not. Canelo is elite, Jacobs is not. Mayweather was elite, Hatton was not. Who else is elite?
On a historical level the only one that really come to mind is Usyk. Literally the only active fighter in their prime right now who I could comfortably pick to hang in there with past greats. Everybody else just has a lack of resume and great opponents. How do I know if Crawford can hang in there with past great fighters? His resume compared to theirs is garbage.
Seriously? You do know that a lot of the "professional boxers" are actually Joe Smo of the streets who make a couple of extra bucks getiing beat up in the ring, right?! There are boxers out there who never even made it out of the 2nd round in 30+ fights, just because they simply can't box and actually can't even take a decent shot. Elite boxers are the ones that fight in at least decent divisions and then still are extremely hard to beat.
Yes I did. But I had to react on your opening. Mainly because it seems that some boxfans still seem to believe that only talented people box professionally, while for a huge portion it's just a way to make money regardless if they are actually even remotely capable.
Joshua is a real elite fighter. He's the endboss. It's like heavyweight boxers all over the world are fighting, working out, dreaming. AJ already lives their dream. While they struggle to fight in front of 5000 people, AJ is selling out stadiums. 90000 people in the audience, hundreds of millions all over the world in front of the TV. His pictures hang on posters in Europe, Dubai and Hong Kong. What's more important is his skillset, his power and a flawless record. He has beaten Top opponents and even living legends. He's the Ali and Tyson of our era.
Sugar ''Money'' Mac is elite, any non boxer who can hang with and even take a round of, let alone numerous ones, in their pro debut against Floyd ''TBE'' Mayweather aka Mr 49-0 (then) aka Mr. No Blueprint is not only elite but they are the elite of the elite.
loma, mikey, crawford and spence. these guys are operating above everyone else. these are the only guys who make very good fighters look like they dont belong.
The elites of each division: Fury Bellew Buatsi Ryder Saunders Pigford Kelly Taylor Campbell Quigg frampton Burnett Dogboe (British) Burnett Yafai Selby
I was looking up some boxers records the other day on boxrec, seeing who they beat to gauge their competitive level. There was a guy on there who was 6-136 or something. I'm used to seeing guys with 3-24 type records but this takes the cake.
For me I'd have these as proven elite level boxers: Anthony Joshua Tyson Fury (though he's currently given some benefit of the doubt after two years out till the Wilder fight when we see where he's at) Oleksandr Usyk Gennady Golovkin Saul Alvarez Keith Thurman (again benefit of the doubt due to injury) Erroll Spence Sean Porter Vasyl Lomachenko Mikey Garcia Terence Crawford Leo Santa Cruz Carl Frampton Naoya Inoue Srisaket Sor Rungvisai Roman Gonzalez Juan Fran Estrada The following are borderline and could squeak. In the next couple of fights: Deontay Wilder Mauris Briedis Murat Gassiev Eleider Alvarez Dimitriy Bivol Adonis Stevenson Oleksandr Gvozdyk Sergei Kovalev Callum Smith Daniel Jacobs Sergei Derevyanchenko Billy Joe Saunders Jermal Charlo Jermal Charlo Jared Hurd Erislandy Lara Danny Garcia Manny Pacquiao Regis Prograis Josh Taylor Jorge Linares Guillerno Rigondeux Josh Warrington Donnie Nietes Miguel Berchelt Luis Nery (due to cheating) Gary Russel Jnr Oscar Valdez Chaperon Moonsri
