Not true. When I was in Omaha, everyone knew Crawford. Same for Spence and Charlo when I lived in Dallas and Houston
The point has nothing to do with whether your schoolmates know who classic boxers were. The point is in the United States pre turn of the century, the top boxers were main stream stars. As famous as any actor, musician athlete from other sports or politician. Now they are third rate niche celebrities, known by relatively few.
Generally extremely famous celebrities carry on to an extent in popular culture. Ie Babe Ruth, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, etc. Obviously they are more popular in their own time, but was Duran really as famous in the US as Mayweather? Sounds a little far-fetched.
He had three huge fights with Leonard, the biggest star in boxing at the time. He was Famous well before that too. Mayweather and Pacquiao are the only post 2000 boxers who are even remotely close to the level of fame the guys back then had. When Duran ko'd Hagler's brother around 83, it was the lead sports story on the radio that afternoon.
In the US? Maybe Ryan Garcia young people here don’t care about boxing and older people see it’s decline from where it was boxings a hard sell these days I will say gen z kids did get excited about Garcia vs tank when social media said it was on so there is some name recognition I don’t think enough people here care anymore for there to be a star regardless of talent or charisma, people here just don’t give a **** anymore
I don't see any stars for a while as media barely cover boxing and you can only find it On obscure apps no one has heard of. If Ryan Garcia is good I feel he without doubt can be a star but I think he is only b level. It will probably be an American heavyweight who can punch
