While I agree that Maidana isn't a gatekeeper, he isn't a multi weight champion. Superhans thinks that everyone is a gatekeeper after closely following Calzaghe as he shamelessly defended his paper title against one tomato can after another.

 

Clottey? You wish. He may look like in the paper but he's not and Canelo knows this that's why he declined to this guy. Those injury excuses are ****.

 

Maidana is a gatekepper. The very definition of one. He has lost to every good fighter he has been in the squared circle with (Kotelnyk, Khan, Alexander and Mayweather twice) as gatekeepers do, his best wins are over fighters who he exposes as hype jobs who continue to prove to be hype jobs (Ortiz, Broner), past their sell by date fighters (Morales) or fellow gatekeepers (Soto Karass, Lopez).

In the remainder of his career, he may well get wins over fighters who have been over hyped by HBO and Showtime, beat more past it fighters who need to hang them up (i.e Zab Judah), and beat some more gatekeppers (like Yoshiro Kamegai) but he will never beat a legit top class talent as he never has before.
