Did you see Liston's corner men put something on his gloves?
Did you see a foreign substance in Clay's eyes?
I think anyone who has ever fought will tell you the whole notion is absurd.
A boxer can't dope his gloves and introduce a substance like that into a fight without it getting into his own eyes.

The whole thing is a myth and a lie that is believed simply because it has been told so much.
It's Dr Goebbels theory of the Big Lie in action.

I don't believe Liston put anything in Clay's eyes.
    I'll leave it at that.

Jorge Fernando Castros epic showing of heart against John David Jackson is as good as it gets.

He absorbed as bad a beating as you'll ever see and kept winging hail mary's until the very end... and landed one that ended the fight.

Also fought from 154 to cruiserweight, usually going against the best in the world at each division.

    Terry Norris at 154

    Roy Jones at 160

Top cruisers from the early 2000's Juan Carlos Gomez and Vasily Jirov.

I'm certainly not discounting anything you're saying.I'm just interested to know whether Ali was faking or something got in his eyes accidentally.

I heard Angelo Dundee say something on a boxing radio/podcast interview just before he died about the Ali Liston 1 blindness thing. He said he thought that Liston had a sore shoulder and one of his cornermen rubbed some alcohol on it, and that's the foreign substance that stung Ali's eyes. He said something about Liston's handlers being friends of his and good guys so he didn't think they'd deliberately try something dirty.

    This was from boxrec:

Machen later said he believed that Liston's handlers made deliberate use of illegal medication in an attempt to temporarily blind him during the fight. He theorized that Liston's handlers rubbed medication on their fighter's shoulders, which was transferred to Machen's forehead during clinches and dripped into his eyes. "I thought my eyes would burn out of my head, and Liston seemed to know it would happen," Machen said. When Liston fought Muhammad Ali—then Cassius Clay—in 1964, Ali returned to his corner after the fourth round and complained that there was something burning in his eyes and he could not see. "The same thing happened to me when I fought Liston in 1960," Machen said two days after Ali upset Liston. "Clay did the worst thing when he started screaming and let Liston know it had worked," Machen added. "Clay panicked. I didn't do that. I'm more of a seasoned pro, and I hid it from Liston."

Everyone has an excuse for losing. Eddie Machen was probably just being opportunistic.
Ali had something in his eyes but for everyone to believe without question that Liston was to blame, seems a bit off.
