I'm thinking about how a poor or mediocre chin can betray an otherwise very gifted fighter. But some guys have overcome a so-so chin.

Who are some ATG's with suspect chins?

I already have Hearns, Jones Jr., Gomez (possibly), Wlad, etc on the list.

Maybe Benitez although its hard to say whether his chin was bad or the times he got dropped were a result of his poor training habits. His later career was typified by his early onset brain damage so I don't really hold that against him to much.

I don't think I'd put Jones, Jr on there. By the time he was KD'd he was in his mid-30's and writing checks his reflexes could no longer cash. He just never made the adjustments that were necessary with age... perhaps because he never mastered some of the fundamentals. I mean the guy was still trying to land leaping lead left hooks in his mid-40's.

Put Terry Norris on that list, tho.

Toney and Hopkins weren't chin checkers though. They are ATG's, but their style is to disarm and slowly break you down and if the KO happens it happens, but they're not seeking a KO.

Doesn't make the wins less impressive.

But they didn't land flush on Jones very often and they didn't possess tremendous power either.

I would have liked to see Jones Jr. face Hearns or Benn to validate his chin at MW and SMW.

Floyd Patterson, Roger Mayweather, Tony Mundine and Kuniaki Shibata. One of the reasons I liked these fighters was because they had a fault and found their way around it with varying levels of success.

Benns chin could be interesting with his power that made him fantastic to watch kill or be killed .

Mediocre chin. No other way to explain it.

Richard Hall could crack. Merqui Sosa could certainly hit. Ruiz hit hard enough especially on a middleweight chin. Going way back Jorge Vaca could bang but I don't think he got a punch in.

My greater point is that chin can be a factor of style... Roy based his style around those reflexes and speed he possessed. Any slower fighter (basically all other fighters) would look sloppy, ****y and knocked out. Well, Roy got slower and had no Plan B for his career and became that guy. But it took until he was 35 years to happen.

Patterson for sure, if you consider him an ATG.
I don't, but some people do.
He definitely had a glass jaw.

Hearns immediately springs to mind. Roger Mayweather would have done more if he had a chin. He was like Hearns Light. Terry Norris is another one.
