America seems to like to overrate/hype their own fighters whilst underrating European ones.

Calzaghe springs to mind for being underrated.

As for overrated, Lacy was apparently the real-deal until Joe whopped him.

I also think that Pavlik fits into this category and I expect him to come up short soon. I don't know why but I really don't like him and think that he was lucky in the first Taylor fight as he was getting outboxed before the big KO. I think people talk up his defensive skills more than they deserve

Joe "Slap Fight" Calzaghe is the most overrated of this era. The guys has wins against Jeff Lacy, Mikkel Kessler, and Bernard Hopkins. Aside from the Lacy win, which was just a stylistic nightmare for Lacy, which one of these wins is that impressive? I'd go so far as to say that a 42-year old 'Nard nearly won that fight. Mikkel Kessler is an unproven quantity and outside of his match with Joe, he's not fought anyone of note.

I can't wait until RJJ (a Roy Jones that is a shadow of his former self, no less) stops him inside seven.

I think it is difficult to say

Americans often hype fighters and are left looking silly, whilst Europeans tend to hug slightly - to me it is two different things.

I think Pavlik is way overrated on here - very good fighter but that is all at present.

I think Calzaghe and Pavlik are overated.
How different things could of been if had been a different ref in the first fight against Taylor.
Calzaghe, i think he is overated by most Brits, to be fair his resume leaves alot to be desired, and so do his slaps.
I used to like both of them but when people are hanging off the end of their cocks on this forum it is a bit off putting.

    Underrated:

Calzaghe is currently heavily underrated. Few acknowledge that he can only perform well, when the opposition is top notch. The fight against Hopkins made alot question how good he currently is.

Chris John - seemingly it goes totally unnoticed that he beat JMM and is still undefeated.

Ronald Winky Wright - Pretty boring to watch, but is still a top notch fighter, but seemingly because he lost a Hopkins two weightclasses above him, he is gone from the radar of most people.

Nonito Donaire - Almost never gets a mention - he is young, skilled and lethal. Is probably the future of the smaller weight classes.

Tons of others, and will just list some of them: Paul Williams, Dawson, Margarito, Andrade.

    Overrated

Ricky Hatton - Haven't looked convincing in years. In fact he just looks worse for each fight - almost.

At the moment I can't come up with others, but it might be due to some brain block on my behalf.

Calzaghe = overrate??? Is that a typo??? (good list other than that...)

I would like to add Calderon into the underrated list. Maybe the most underrated UNBELIEVABLE talent in years....of course its because he has ZERO power...but underrated none the less.

All top boxers are overrated by their fans and underrated by their haters so it's all subjective really.

Is anyone else sick of the name Joe Calzaghe? I really hope he retires after the Jones fight. We'll have to endure a few months of "where does JC rate as an ATG" style posts then he'll be forgotten. Phew.

I would say Dawson is overrated. Having seen a bit of him I think he is decent, but not all that to be honest.

I think Mayweather is underrated as well, perhaps many are blinded by hate that they fail to recognise his star quality.

One of the most underrated present fighters is Sergej Dzindziruk, and one of the most overrated ones is Steve Cunningham IMO.
