Who would you say has such complete mastery of boxing technique and skill that they could be professors of the sport? I know Azumah Nelson has the nickname but quite frankly, I wasn't that impressed with his fights against Leija, although he did wonderfully against Fenech. I'm high on Gerry Penalosa. Watchin him is like taking a boxing class. He's got it down to a science. James Toney talks a lot of **** but his mastery of the shoulder roll style is just amazing. Might sound crazy but I think Alfonso Gomez is on his way. He doesn't have much in the way of speed, strength, talent or athleticism but he has great technique and timing. His combos are straight out textbook. Who else would you consider professors of the sport?
I'd take out Gomez and add in Bernard Hopkins, Alexis Arguello, Ricardo Lopez, Floyd Mayweather, and Juan Manuel Marquez.
great thread I agree with your picks, except for Alfonzo Gomez Gerry Penalosa boxing is beatiful, i've seen about 4 of his fights and his technique is flawless...if the guy was a little bit bigger he would have dominated for sure Marco Antonio Barrera's boxer puncher style was PHD worthy, he could move in and out of range, use his jab to get in, land 4 punch combos and move out of range...or mix it up on the inside. the guy could do anything Israel Vazquez conditioning and the way he finds his range to land those perfect hooks is amazing to watch
do u mean ring intelligence? out of active fighters, these are the ones that strike me as having the most knowledge in the ring (put another way, they adapt the most during a fight to exploit an opponents' weaknesses while minimizing their own): hopkins jones mayweather casmayor when he wants to rafael marquez
Believe it or not, athletic phenoms like Floyd and RJJ are guys I'd exclude from this list. I'd add Whitaker though and agree on those guys in Arguello, Lopez, Marquez and Nelson.
I'd take off Roy and keep Floyd. If you really pay attention to Floyd, he isn't as gifted as people say. He's quick-handed, but not on the level of RJJ, Shane, or SRL. He just throws short, quick, accurate punches. He uses tha philly shell defense, but i've seen other fighters use it. I just think he's mastered his style pretty much. He does everything really, really good and he's well rounded. Whitaker was a athletic phenom, actually. All that unorthodox ducking and slipping of punches was sheer reflexes and quickness.
Great picks on JMM, Casamayor and Hopkins. Arguello is unusually tall for his weight class and a great puncher. He does have a high boxing IQ but I think his natural advantages allowed him to cruise at times. Roy and Whitaker are the same, brilliantly unorthodox fighters with their own unique styles, but their talents allowed them to bypass some boxing fundamentals. I love those guys but they are at best Master Degrees.
