i wouldnt put usa anywhere up there. There best fighters turn pro before making an amateur impact. Ukraine deserve a mention too on the basis of that one lad, cant remember his name but hes only early 20s and hes quality. Said he will turn over after London

The quality of the USA boxing team has gone down shockingly, from 1976 and 1984 to todays version. What have they done wrong I wonder.

The Kazakhs are quality, they normally stay amateur though. Cuba has had excellent success throughout the years, recent pros to be succesful amateurs are Gamboa, Lara, Solis, Casamayor, Rigondeux and a few more. Russia are good, ireland have a good squad at present, GB has improved dramatically over the last decade.

Yeah i dont really know much about the USA's amateurs i was just guessing as it is a big boxing country, Jose Benivedez was a good amateur but turned pro early. Is Mexico any good at the amateur level but do they all turn pro early too like Morales and Barerra?

I think the only thing thats gone wrong with team usa is that managers and promoters are encouraging fighters to go pro early instead of staying amateur. Look at someone like deontay wilder or gary russell jr and compare them to Frankie Gomez or Benevidiez. Regardless of whos better the first two went to olympics, second two didnt yet the second two are better known now. These kids over there are being offered silly money so why wait 4 years for an olympics. Gomez got 350g for signing with golden boy. Its gonna be tough for any 17 year old am to turn that down.

Yeah i guess but Brits like James Degale who won the Olympic gold got a 1.2 million deal off frank warren as far as i know to turn pro after Olympics. Obviously its hard for anyone to turn down 350g's at any stage but it might be worth it to try their luck, the likes of khan, degale...

Maybe great talents like Gomez and Benavidez can go pro at 17 andhave a great career, but the majority of young boxers need to have an experienced amateur career to get to the highest level, If it continues like thi, its only a matter of time before pro boxing in the US starts showing the negative effects of this trend.

definitely british and Irish prospects benefit from the exposure gained in olympics, I wont argue with that. I just dont think the same applies to the States. I dont think the us olympians get any extra hype compared to their other prospects to be honest. In a lot of cases, it just boils down to that their olympians arent that good. Eric De Leon is supposedly one of their top medal prospects for London but Tom Stalker spanked him not so long ago and Stalkers not even sure to be on team GB come the olympics ( think Martin Ward is the same weight, not sure )
