Just saw a study showing how De La Hoya punched effectively going backwards v Chavez it was their where DLH hurt Chavez with a right while going backwards, which other fighters were great at this tacttic and who would be the top 10 fighters that could use this tactic?

A lot of counter punchers throw what my old coach used to call check hooks when stepping back. Traditional hooks are effective power shots when pivoting off the lead foot but when moving backwards you are relying on the speed and timing of the punch more so than power.

Corey Spinks use to throw counter check hooks a lot from what I recall. He liked to counter jabs with that punch.

Absolutely. Look up Kenny Adam's. He did a lot of work with the USA amatuer fighters from the late 80's early 90's. Corey and Floyd both trained with him along with all the other top amauter American fighters of those days. He was an extremely tough trainer that put an emphasis on movement and counter punching.

If you are talking hitting with power going backwards I am not sure off of the top of my head. But Hector Camacho would fit the bill for me on this regard. He basically won a decision (not on my card but officially) against Mancini doing this the entire fight

Two of the best performances I have ever seen come from old guys.
Mickey Walker vs. Ace Hudkins and Billy Petrolle vs. Battling Battalino. Walker and Battalino both fight backing up the whole fight.

Harry Kid Matthews vs. Irish Bob Murphy and Danny Nardico come to mind as well. Though I'd need to watch them again to make sure if Matthews is going backward as much as Walker and Petrolle.

Ali had a great right hand and left hook come uppercut whilst moving backwards.

Not really a top 10, just listing some names who come to mind.

Willie Pastrano, slick mover who inspired Ali.

    Jose Legra

Lionel Rose, masterful, watch against Fighting Harada

    Jersey Joe Walcott

    Sugar Ray Robinson

Jose Napoles could punch from all angles

    Benny Leonard

    Jack Britton

Eusebio Pedroza, as he was usually the taller man in his bouts

    Hillario Zapata

    Samart Payakroon

Ezzard Charles, simply a master of boxing.

Is a stick and run guy like Pastrano really in the category of a fighter who could fight going backwards? I interpreted the thread as referring to fighters who continually give ground, but maintain leverage to do damage while they are backing up. It's the art of bending with the wind and turning the opposing fighter's aggressiveness into a liability by sucking him in for easy counter shots. I guess there's different ways of looking at it, but the way you choose to interpret the thread determines which fighters you select.

Or maybe there's something about Pastrano's style that I'm not remembering?

I do agree with you, and I think it is very skillful when a fighter does this. Just throwing out names that might fit, and Pastrano was one of the great movers in boxing.

Any examples of fights where you thought showed him to be number one at this?

Rumble In The Jungle. He was using the ropes tho. I couldn't recall any exact moments or fights. All i know he used to throw a mean left hook n uppercut going backwards. He used it every fight.
