Not really true Unforgiven. Would Pac have been as good as hes become without Freddie Roach for example?? Its a two way street and sometimes a trainer or even the fighter themselves dont know the level of talent they possess.

I think taking a talented fighter to the next level can qualify a trainer for being great, especially on the championship level.

Im not either, but there are not too many "big names", that havent started from scratch. Think of how long it takes to develop a young kid, a lifetime almost. How many super talents come strolling into the gym in a lifetime, and how many actually fufill their full potential?

Kevin Rooney would be a good example of this he wont leave the Catskills, but the goal of most trainers is to develop world champions.

We dont know, but there have been some great fighters who have been completely or primarily "self-taught" or "natural".

Conversely, there are no great trainers who dont have successful fighters.

    That's fair enough.
I dont necessarily agree but I dont have any problem with that. I dont take the "greatness" of trainers too seriously, it's a bit unnecessary to attribute greatness to trainers. But i will indulge them because everyone else seems to.
I'd draw the line at lengthy discussions of the great referees though.

Managers and promoters might actually be the far more influential figures over a fighter's success than a good trainer.

Not many, and that's my point.

I dont think that's the goal of most trainers.
Most trainers just like to teach boys and young men to box and better themselves and be the best they can be.
