Manny Pacquiao currently. Coming off a KO loss and arguably 2 losses before that. His prescence was all hype.

    Benitez as well.

    Yeah.

Hagler was still considered the best fighter on the planet at that point and nobody was picking SRL to win. They thought he was a lunatic for doing it with his previous retina damage and having only one professional fight in the five years leading up to it, never at 160. Two of the sanctioning bodies wouldn't even accept the fight and stripped Hagler for signing for it. He actually deferred the higher purse to Marvin, and the number of rounds/ring size were no different than when he'd fought Hearns and Mugabi, before it gets taken there.

He gets no credit for that win from me. Frankly, he doesn't need it either. He was secured after Hagler, and made a circus out of his career after it.

Well, Pryor turned down the initial offer saying it wasn't enough money. He eventually accepted a second one and was going to fight Leonard in the fall of 1982 after SRL fought Roger Stafford in May of the same year. The detached retina was discovered before he could get there.

I've also got a serious fundamental problem with the notion that a guy could fight the opponents that SRL did but somehow dread a showdown with Aaron Pryor? I mean, disregarding the fact that Leonard made two offers to him. He went life-and-death with a faded Arguello in his fourth and least effective weight class and likely even cheated to pull it out. Hypothetical wins don't exist in boxing, but Leonard would've sat down on his shots and absolutely annihilated him. Unlike Roberto Duran - who may have been the best fighter in history at blending offense and defense simultaneously - Pryor was Mr. Wide Open Spaces.

Yeah, and a lot of people seem to think Leonard would box Pryor. I just don't see the need. Leonard had some seriously underrated Pop when he loaded up and Pryor is one of the most hittable 'ATGs' of the last several decades. People who believe Duran recklessly went after Leonard and slugged with him need to rewatch it -- he slipped literally hundreds of punches and had defensive capabilities Pryor couldn't dream of. More than that, he was actually a full fledged, proven and highly rated Welterweight when he fought SRL. Compare Ray to relative twig Arguello going for a fourth divisional crown. This is a full blown, natural welterweight thoroughbred.

Yeah I agree with you. I remember the first time I watched Duran/SRL. I was so blown away at the skill level of both of them. They both where feinting, showing good punch variety, counter punching, head movement, inside fighting, etc. It was beautiful :smile
