Now I haven't seen everyone, especially the lighter weight guys, and some of the foreign guys, and I define prospect like this. Not over mid-20's (27th birthday has not come yet) and has never fought for a world title. For me, only two guys really stand out: Joshua Buatsi Teofimo Lopez Two guys in totally different cirmstances, Buatsi at 25 with an Olympic medal and only 7 fights, and Lopez at 21 with a domestic-level amateur career and 10 fights. I think these are the two young guys that strike me as having a huge chance at the HOF. I think our best chance at a Leonard/Duran type fight is Buatsi and Benavides, probably at 175. Who did I miss? Who are yours?
Devin Haney. He really appears to be the goods and he's stepping up his competition. First he stopped Mason Menard and now he's fighting Juan Carlos Burgos. He's only like 19, too. I think.
I have to take another look at Haney. I've watched a few rounds and he looks very good and competent, but doesn't have the "wow" factor from what I've seen. My first gut feeling is that from today until 2030 he will always be a step below Lopez.
Haney has great fundamentals and veteran-like composure/maturity. Could have taken Menard out sooner, but opted to methodically tee off on him instead. He's got good size and fighting better opposition than Teofimo while being two years younger.
Oh pick a division and make this a little more interesting or limited, please! I like the under 27 rule, but still hundreds such as: Minimumweight Kai Ishizawa (4-0, 4) - 21 - Japan Samuel Salva (15-0, 9) - 21 – Phil Light Flyweight Dave Apolinario (7-0, 5) - 19 – Philippines Flyweights Ryota Yamauchi (3-0, 3) - 23 – Japan Junto Nakatani (16-0, 12) - 20 - Japan Super Flyweight Hayate Kaji (10-0, 8) – 21 - Japan And those are just in the 4 lowest weight classes, not even looked at the talent from Central Asia (Murodjon Akhmadaliev, Ulugbek Sobirov, Shakhram Giyasov, Sadriddin Akhmedov) We are in an awesome time for boxing prospects. Seriously if you narrow it down it'd stop me from producing a list of 50+ fighters for you
Robson Conceicao Dude is featherfisted but a real talent. Powerful enough to keep his opponents honest.
Yes there are a lot of guys, and quite honestly I have not been as apt to study the sub-feathers than I was in the past, but in mentioning Buatsi and Lopez, I tagged two guys that I think could be SUPERSTARS. I'm talking hall of fame level talent. I think these two guys, while very early pass the test, Who do you think under 27 who has not fought for a title could be a superstar?
I'd love to see a Concecicao - Lomachenko rematch, but the guy is almost 30, he is a flyweight and has 8 fights. At some point you go from "prospect" to "suspect."
Depends what you mean by superstar... Every I mentioned I fancy to win and have decent reigns as a world champion. Are they the next Mayweather, no, are they the next Yamanaka possibly... Of those mentioned Yamauchi would be the best pick imo
Really rate Buatsi, just slightly worried that he may not have the power to keep guys off him at the top level.
Shakur Stevenson who won Silver in Rio I think is an excellent technical boxer, he's the prospect I've got my eye on. Nice jab, counter punching, movement and defence, only thing he lacks his power. Buatsi is definitely one to watch too, he seem a very good all round fighter and seems very professional in his approach. Josh Kelly. He's just exciting to watch, he might not be the real deal as his flashy style might get exposed against world class operators but he's an interesting and entertaining fighter and worth keeping an eye on in case he has some substance along with the flashy style.
Well he's not terribly young but Brian Castano looks like he could be special, I think Lewis Riston has star potential. Teofimo Lopez is a sure thing way better than Stevenson or where I see him ending up. Anthony Simms Jr. is also very young, and looks like he could have the tools to be a star as well.Of course Buatsi is gonna be up there as well. I just don't get the Josh Kelly mentions.
Sergey Vorobiev would have to get a shout out. He was just 6-0 before recently defeating 34-0 Konstantin Ponomarev. That deserves a position on this list. A hell of a step up in class. Pretty unbelievable. Kid is only 23. Ponomarev was the mandatory for Spence at one point.
