How did we manage to leave those guys out?! Apart from this Bernstein fellow - never heard of him. Is he German too?
I checked this fight because I wanted to re-check who Durphy was and he did make the 60`s seem like this mysterious movie with his charismatic, familiar voice, I wouldn`t know what the 60`s were like, I was born in `76, but they seem strange because of the black and white footage. Beinstein is in the boxing hall of fame because he was such a notable commentator in America during the 80`s, you can here him on youtube, he has a very distinctive voice, he commentated on the Conor vs Floyd fight and felt Conor did well, so I think his boxing knowledge was questionable.
Uh, probably Don Dunphy and Roy Jones. And good old Big George, even though he often said things that didn't make much sense. Love the guy.
I think you 2nd half is 100% right. But who is the best blow by blown man around today? I think its Lampley, and he has had some historic calls.
I don't mind most of the commentators over the years. Colonel Bob Sheridan, Al Bernstein, Roy Jones, Paulie Malignaggi, Steve Farhood, Raul Marquez, Don Dunphy, Howard Cosell, Jerry Quarry, Rich Marotta and Barry Tompkins spring to mind. All are different in their way but all have a certain energy for the sport.
I would go with Don Dunphy. Being from the UK, I haven't heard many of his commentaries, but from what I've heard he didn't talk for the sake of it and would let the action speak for itself. For example, in the Thrilla in Manila, he would sometimes limit his comments to stuff like 'two minutes left in the round' and 'Ali really got nailed.' As for UK commentators I never really liked Reg Gutteridge. I preferred Harry Carpenter but he had an annoying habit throughout his career of saying 'he doesn't know where he is.'
