He did come back after a long layoff to fight the #1 rated Sam Peter, and most people picked him to win, and indeed he did win. Now factor in Dempsey's size, and you can understand why people were impressed by the way he beat Willard.
Janitor Sam Peter was not number 1 rated when he fought Vitali. Vitali never defeated a number 1 rated Ring Magazine fightrr
Am I misreading something here? It was Willard that came back against Dempsey after a 3 year and 4 month lay off, so why should Jack get special praise just because Willard was big? So Tom McMahon must deserve special credit too because he gave away 50 lbs to Willard, as did Gunboat Smith, compared to Dempsey's 58 lbs. So I say fuk it, lets add Gunboat Smith, and McMahon to the list of all the old timers who beat Foreman, the K2 brothers, and Lewis. Even though the guys who did stop Foreman, the K2's, and Lewis were NOT 50 lbs lighter than them.
This in incorrect, Wills was not the standout challenger for 6 years. You may say he was in: 1920 1922 1925 1919 If you want, but Dempsey did not win the title till July of that year. Wills best scalps during Dempsey's reign are over Fulton ,Firpo, and a 39 years old half blind Langford. Langford was losing to Bill Tate and drawing with 1-0-0 George Godfrey, both Dempsey sparring partners in1920 .Langford also lost to Lee Anderson12-7-7 and Jack Thompson 16 -7-4 he was no longer a factor at top level. If Dempsey had defended against him, he would have been as roundly condemned for doing so as he is by you for not fighting Wills. Fulton and Firpo had lasted less then 3 rounds in total against Dempsey previously, plus Firpo was not in shape for the Wills fight. .
