Who beat better competition Whitaker or Duran

DeJesus was far better than all Whitaker`s opponents, McGirt was good but nowhere near Leonard`s level specifically in terms of speed and power. De La Hoya`s reach and hand speed was something to face but nothing compared to Hearns who would of knocked him out, Whitaker never faced anyone that could slip or use the jab like Buchannan could, Chavez`s fights at welter weren`t impressive and he didn`t go on to do anything after his bout with Pernell at light weight or p4p Chavez could of matched anyone of Duran`s opponents in terms of quality, but he really didn`t look that good v pea partly because Whitaker was so hard to hit but also he had lost a step or two and went downhill afterwards, Sugar was far better at welter than Chavez and so was Hearns who retained his speed as he moved up to light middle. Duran also did well against Hagler with a reach that was no match for Marvin`s.

 

Duran for sure .And he looked better doing it !

 

Duran and both lightweight and welterweight.

That said, I can see Pernell running Duran's lightweight resume without suffering a legitimate defeat.

 

Pernell was one of my favorite fighters at that time. Like Duran I consider the real Whitaker to be a Lightweight and into 140lbs. I would have liked to see Chavez/Pea around 1990.

Duran faced the better opp.

Pea's style and skill set would trouble anyone.

Duran has the better resume, and mostly because of the SRL victory. That said, I wouldn't pick anybody Duran beat from 140 and below to beat Whitaker.

 

Even if you count Chavez (I do) it's really a stretch to say Pea beat anyone as good as SRL in 1980. Otherwise they're probably pretty even in quality of opponents they beat.

 

Whitaker vs Chavez is another fight that should have happened years earlier.

 

at lightweight? I would not say Duran's competition was better. Overall he fought better guys. the Leonard fight helps him a lot.

 

well he still beat Azumah,,and Roger Mayweather who was not great at lightweight, but solid. I remember that was at a base in Norfolk I think.. I have it on tape somewhere, which means nothing since all the fights are on youtube now. Haugen was good.. Buchanan and DeJesus were not necessarly that great fighters.
