Are you taking into account the quality of opposition that Malignaggi offers in both fights because I've seen Malignaggi Regressing since fighting Cotto to be honest.
If the fight ever happens, stick your avatar on the line. Hatton has a better chance at beating Cotto than any other fighter between 135-147 other than Margo, who would whip him 95/100. Styles.
I'd say Cotto since he fought a better version of Malignaggi. Against Hatton, outside of a few half assed jabs, Paulie hardly let his hands go. Sure you could argue it was Hatton's style that wouldn't permit him to get off as freely as he would have liked. But I find that hard to believe since virtually none of Hatton's previous opponents have had trouble getting off. Hatton basically won the fight by throwing more than a one handed gun shy opponent who clinched more than he threw punches. Hatton circa-Vince Phillips or Ray Oliveira would have rolled Malignaggi that night inside of 6 rounds.
Broke what part of Malignaggi? He may have broke his corner into throwing the towel, but he didn't break Malignaggi. Actually, Malignaggi's response to the stoppage demonstrates how he really wanted to continue. A broken man, such as Cotto was against Margarito, doesn't argue his corner's decision, in contrast to Maglinaggi, who pushed his trainer for doing so.
I know, that's what I'm saying. It's been pretty obvious for a long time that Cotto is more of an accumulation puncher than knockout artist. Margarito himself said that Cotto isn't a very big puncher. Why then, does everybody look like they got beat with a lead pipe afterward? WTF is going on with his gloves? I haven't anything like it in all my years as a fan.
There must have been a reason for the corner stopping the fight - he was receiving a bad beating. He was receiving a worse beating against Cotto granted, but was still in the fight. When you are being outjabbed by Ricky Hatton, it is time to turn it in and either retire or hit the drawing board.
