Why does that shock you? Bivol has above average power; he falls slightly short of being a big puncher. Slava, Smith Jr., and Valera pack bricks in their gloves and they still could not put away Barrera. Barrera does not have an iron chin but he recovers very well. If anything, that is a credit to Bivol's timing and punch placement which makes his punch effective despite not having the sheer power of Kovalev or Beterbiev. Even the Nail has a little more power than Bivol.
It's all relative. Uzcategui beat Andre Dirrell in a more dominant fashion than Froch. Does that mean Uzcat is better than Froch? We just have to see when Bivol fights Kovalev which is the next level up.
To be honest, it doesn't shock me, I've said it before, I knew his power wasn't that impressive, it was hyperbole for dramatic effect. What shocks me is the over the top reactions people are having him to beating Sullivan Barrera.
A knockdown against a clearly off-balance and ultimately unhurt Sullivan is more hocus-pocus than impressive.
Bivol was far more impressive. Bivol boxed within the rules, and used his speed and boxing skills to defeat Barrera. Ward fouled (held, wrestled, clutched, and low-blowed) his way to an unimpressive win.
He did nail Barrera in the stones several times. But for the worst low blow, the referee was more honest than the ref in the second Kovalev fight. He gave Sullivan time to recover and deducted a point from Ward.
You also have to take into account the intentions going into each fight, Ward would have used to the fight more so to shake of rust and get rounds in while taking little risk not wanting to pick up any cuts or injury's etc knowing the kovalev fight was looming. Bivol would have gone into this fight being the young up and coming guy wanting to impress and make a statement knowing full well that ward comparisons would be made afterwards. Also in bivols defense, hes still not even peaked him self i am sure in a couple of years times he too would be more impressive than his currently is right now.
Ward did he beat him first and damn near shut him out. With that said it was a good performance by Bivol to who proved me wrong.
