Hagler had the best chance at 160 IMO... Very durable, could keep coming forward, had the power to hurt Roy... Jackson, Benn and McClellan had punchers chances for sure...and were all almost the same era. I thought Roy was a bit better at 168.
Good Post KO.. Though I would heavily favor Roy over Hearns at 160 or 168, you never know.. Hearns certainly was a great boxer and had the tools to KO Roy, if Roy didn't get him out of there first... What a first few rounds that would have been though... I think the outcome would have happened fast. I also favor Roy over Hagler slightly at 160... I am not sure though. As you pointed out, stylistically it could mean trouble for Roy... Hagler is super durable, could keep coming forward, almost a blue collar type beast... Roy would be in for the fight of his life... Though Hagler never quite faced anyone quite as heavy handed with the same amount of speed as Roy.... As Roy never fought anyone like Hagler.... Pick em fight for me.
Hagler VS Jones would be a great fight. I agree Hagler would win at 160 as Roy was inexperienced at this weight. 168 would be a completely different story. Jones VS Hopkins in 2002 would be a mirror copy of the first fight due to styles. Bernard has problems with guys with speed and great athleticism (J Taylor). Jones VS McClellen would be an interesting fight. Gerald even under Manny was a very wasteful fighter. I'd expect a cautious Roy to dance round Gerald in the early rounds and then score a 116-112 UD.
With Roy's Glass Jaw he gets KOed at 160 by several ATG's. Hagler and SRR would put him in a Coma. This business about Jones being unbeatable at 160 0r 168 is laughable. He has no Chin and no Plan B in a fight and he would need one aginst an ATG. We are not talking about Otis Grant or Rick Frazier here. Jones would get knocked silly by other legit ATG's at 160, 168, and 175.
SRR, I think would have been too small... Hagler would have a great chance at Jones at 160... You forget how hard he was to hit flush... there are many ATG's he would need no plan B for.. simply too fast, hit too hard, and too hard to hit.
Not going to pick a Glass Jawed fighter with no Plan B in a fight against other ATG's. Sorry. Just the way it is.
Rico is a chin expert and a knowledgeable poster. As much as I disagree about his stance on Roy, he does know his ****.
I know Griffin was not an ATG by any means, but he was pretty good at his very best... Do you not consider Jones ad******g mid fight, and imposing is will against him not a plan B? Or even in the rematch when he had a different game plan all together? How about Tarver I... Roy was weight drained, in for the fight of his life, came up big and won the last 2 rounds.. He really did dig down deep at that moment in my opinion... You have to remember too, Roy was in his 30's, and fighting an elite LHW that spent most of his life obsessing over beating Roy. He showed great heart there.
