That’s good in theory but who can pull it off in practice? Jorge Castro, a grizzled veteran, tried it Roy’s 18th fight and got chewed up. Bernard Hopkins has to rank as one of the more able in this area with his aggressive, mauling style. He was competitive in spots but outclassed over 12 rounds. Hopkins didn’t lose again for 12 years — in fact it’s his only loss between his debut (which he dropped a 4-round decision) and his 50th (a split to Jermaine Taylor). I don’t disagree about strategy but whoever tries to pull it off has to walk through Jones’ firepower and also pin him down with Roy’s movement and reflexes … and do so long enough and convincingly enough over the distance to win a decision or somehow chop him down, which seems unlikely in Roy’s prime. It’s a puzzle that’s hard to put together. Best bet would be a murderous puncher somehow getting through with a fight-changing shot and being able to end it, but again I’m not sure who I’d pick to do that at 168 or even 160.
