Yes he lost, but displayed everything else he needed besides the stamina to go full on all fight in humid 82 degree weather. He denied the jab with his mummy defense. Cut the ring off exceptionally well, landed monster body punch combinations. Is there anyone else who goes the distance, much less finishes him, other than Ali?
I don't think many others would have lasted long enough for him to tire. Lets see what people come up with.
Not many for sure. The only names I can sort of see doing it are Lewis, bowe. The big guys from that era on. Holmes perhaps.
I did this one a few yrs back....... https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/zaire-who-else-could-have-beat-foreman-that-night.465719/
lewis would be psyched out and succumb to a fourth round knockout. Very few. Foreman mk one is woefully underrated. Ali never wanted to give him a rematch in 1976
Its a hard one Stevie cos the guy was a absolute beast. Punching power that was still knocking guys out twenty years later. He was kind of a freak of nature with it, there's not a lot of guys I see doing what he did to frazier in Jamaica. So definitely a question mark on even modern day giant s like Lewis and Bowe.
Again Im going to **** some people off but what is Zaire Foreman going to do against a good tall jabber with mobility and atleast average power like Holmes Tucker or a motivated Douglas Foremans defense was pawing and pushing, if his opponent has the attributes listed above he is going to bounce 1-2s off foremans head all night, how is foreman going to land consistently(remember he is not really a true 1 punch KO artist)? He has no smart or quick footwork to get inside on a good tall boxer. ESPECIALLY if he has power and makes him gunshy... his opponent will land his stuff and then get out of the way. Tucker had legs to move for 12 rounds, good chin, decent power. Foreman isnt getting him out with one punch. Please tell me how Foreman beats a guy like that. Its awfully convenient to say "yeah foreman was unbeatable but the great ali did it" but anything after that wasnt the real foreman so the evidence showing how flawed foreman was after and including the loss to Ali is written off as Ali being the greatest(which he is) and Foreman not being Foreman after that. As someone who wasnt around then looking back at the tapes of that era, Zaire Foreman being unbeatable sounds like emotional hero worship to me. Ali beating him without keeping the majority of the fight in the middle of the ring is whats truly remarkable about that win to me. Not that he beat someone that was in essence just a big very strong boy swinging for the fences in Foreman. But maybe thats just hindsight bias. Bowe and Lewis would both also be at a huge advantage against foreman stylistically but both have shown vulnerability to getting badly hurt or knocked out by single punches from people who hit less hard than Foreman so i couldnt bet on them for sure. This being said George Foreman is in my top 10-15 favorite fighters ever even though i STRONGLY dislike "limited" fighters
Very very few hwts don't get koed let alone beat that Foreman. Since Johnson possibly just Louis, Holmes and Ali. Possibly Tunney. All four have the boxing ability to outbox George. Lewis also has a chance however the way he was koed twice with single blows gives me cause to ponder.
Lennox Lewis Wladimir Klitschko Riddick Bowe Vitali Klitschko Larry Holmes Foreman's style may have been rudimentary but it was working for him and he also had that aura of being unstoppable, mean and aggressive with huge power and strength. I am confident these 5 would have an edge but if George is capable of taking any of them out if given the opportunity. I don't want to jump the gun but gut instinct tells me Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua could have the edge but I will err on the side of caution and wait until both have proved themselves more.
