I don't know in all honesty if Oliver ever did get knocked down by Mike in sparring ever. i never saw it but i do remember Oliver getting some mad punishment by Mike, his eyes were always blackened in camp.. Mike and him always got into it and it was not always tame.. Oliver , Greg Page, Friday Ahunanya all had Mike on the floor on the odd time.. but Mike just shook it off. Oliver to my knowledge was only really hurt one time and almost quit, that was in the fight in Tennessee against Damiani.. if you ever ask Oliver about that fight he will tell you himself, Damiani was a really tough *******.. but still McCall broke his nose and broke his spirit by turning the events around.... mirageboxing.blogspot.com
If he had not quit in the rematch against Lewis. McCall would have took a beating to the degree he most likely would have been kayoed. or at the very least dropped.
I think off of that fight it had many people saying holy **** this guy can take a shot. Lewis hit him with a righthand and he just walked away. Mcall was in no mental shape to fight either, so he could have easily just went down.
If Lewis had really intended to knock McCall out in that rematch he could and would have. He obviously was in his "B" mode...like against Holyfield both times...don't know why he would do that, because he was capable of knocking ANYONE out...
lewis didnt go after mccall because he was still a little scared since mcall had koed him and when the last time somebody started crying in the ring. lewis was as confused as anybody. as for mccall and chuvalo, listen, you can have the greatest chin, if you get hit enough times, you'll get dropped. the human head is not made to be beat on. mccall had his hands up against bruno, and chuvalo might have seen canvas had his fights with frazier and foreman had not been stopped.
I would have liked to seen Oliver hit clean by Corrie Sanders. I always thought McCall was one of those Cobb types that braces himself for the big shots. He see's the Lewis or Tua or Ruddock single type shots coming and he can absorb them. The thing with that Sanders left was that it was not telegraphed, extremely fast, and straight as an arrow. And Oliver does stand right in front of people so that lightning bolt may very well land the first or second round. It's a different punch to absorb. Those tail end of Bruno combos got the attention of McCall and I'd just like to see a nasty left hook from a Morrison or straight left from Sanders land for a better gauge. Or how about McCall getting countered after he throws on of his wide looping rights where he falls in? Or beat to the punch when he throws those things late in fights? A guy like Tyson beating him to the punch would be interesting to see him absorb in say the 7th round. I also think McCall would've been stopped by Lewis in their first bout because he was way too intense in there. The air would've went out of the balloon after 7 or 8 rounds and it'd be tough to hang in there with an empty gastank. Speaking of empty gastank, I think that's what a Frazier or Marciano would do to Oliver to get the stoppage. Their pace would force McCall to work 2 or 300% more than he is accustomed. Throw in those body blows and late in fights that wear and tear just seems to take that initial punch resistence away. Plus, there is a likelyhood he's woefully behind on the scorecards as well and it's tough to grit your teeth to make it to the end to lose a lopsided fight.
Yep Lennox was being cautious, he jumped in to take McCall out in the first fight and was caught by a wonderful right hand hand counter. LEnnox wasnt going for the KO against McCall
Cant see Sanders power being too big an issue as he couldnt damage the chinny Rahman. I personally don't think McCall's chin has been as tested as is made out though, he never took Lennox's best shots, because in the first LEnny got stopped early, in the rematch Lenny was being cautious. McCall is too big and strong to get ko'd by Marciano/Frazier imo, the man is a physical beast, strength isnt everything but both would need to be wary of his massive power too so both would have to box smart, get in and out maybe
If anyone could do it, the guy I'd have money on the most would be Louis. Still not saying I'd favour to him do it, but I would pick him. I've always felt that Louis was the most gifted heavyweight offensively in history.
Ah the myth of Corrie Sanders being this monstrous puncher continues. The guy had good power, but certainly not on the level of Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno, who hit Mcall with everything they had.
I have 9rds of tyson sparring with mccall in 1988........tyson landed sum heavy and fast **** in there...........and mccall ate them up and shoved tyson to the ropes most of the time.........so no tyson wouldnt knock mccall out..............................vitali um well mccall getting up there in age.......i doubt he would put mccall down.....maybe tko.......same with vitali///...........................i think foream in his prime put put mccall down on his knees
I WONDER HOW LENNOX LEWIS WOULD HANDLE A PRIME TYSON................................IN HIS PRIME MIKE TYSON WAS MUCH FASTER THAN DAVID TUA...:rasta
This will sound odd but i think Muhammed Ali can stop the bull at least. Ali was on a completly different level too McCall and McCall would be seriously getting out classed for every round. Also take into consideration Ali did come on strong in the last few rounds i can see the ref waving it off around the 10th in a 12 rounder or the 13th in a 15 rounder
