Absolute rubbish. Theres definitely some validity to the doubting of Calzaghes record (not to the extent of some peoples claims though, anyone who states he isnt a great elite fighter is a tool), i don't believe his record represents how good he is as a boxer, he is better than it shows. If he beats Kelly it will do a lot more for his record than any previous fight has. Theres always going to be a couple of ******s that will never accept him (like with any fighter) but if he got 2 more big wins it would really cement his spot as an ATG and great fighter of our time. He did go a long time without dipping into the US market, i think his most impressive win is Kessler but unfortunately Kessler doesn't have much of a following in the US so he doesn't get the recognition he deserves for it. Pavlik on the other hand is huge. It will be the greatest middleweight on the planet vs the greatest super middleweight, it will prove a lot. The problem with a lot of JCs wins are that the fighters he has beaten have lost the plot afterwards. If Lacy went on and beat some top contenders it would have completely changed things. If Kessler beats a top SMW like Bute or similar, it will do a lot for Calzaghes win over him, showing that he truly did beat a top fighter.
Joe doesn't need Dawson to secure an already admirable legacy. I do think he needs Jones though, since Jones is still active. Pavik (or Dawson, or Johnson, or Tarver) then Jones.
I think it would be killer to give Johnson a shot at the Ring Title (since everyone seems to think Johnson got robbed against Dawson. I thought Johnson fought a great fight, but the combos and workrate of Dawson were enough for me to give it Dawson by a round). If he beats Johnson, then fight Dawson. On a sidenote, I find it odd that people hold Pavlik so high these days and Kessler so low. Im a big Pavlik fan but if Pavlik had fought Calzaghe on the night Kessler did, he'd have a loss on his record too. Calzaghe was IMPRESSIVE in that fight, against a guy who may very well be able to beat Pavlik. Kessler is certainly similar enough in style to Pavlik for one too assume that Calzaghe would find a way to outcraft the more traditional Pavlik.
Two good posts out of this mess .... Actually, he'll gain some credit if he can defeat Dawson (not merely survive and avoid being KO'd), same with George and Johnson. Then, Pavlik & Jones.
Just going slightly off track here but I wonder how KP would fare against Hopkins? I think he'd be in for a long, long night. Anyone?
