I lived through this as well. Hopkins should have taken the rematch he was offered and turned down in late 1996.
The thing about RJJ is that he could do just about anything. He could lead, he could box, he worked the body well, and he had great timing to go with his great speed.
Using words like 'nuthugger' makes you sound like a 7 year old general forum poster. And every post you make about 90s boxing illustrates that in fact no you didn't follow the sport during the era. When the rematch and chance to redeem himself was offered to Hopkins he turned it down time and again. Even when Jones was past it and losing, Hopkins still didn't want the rematch until years later. Because BHOPs knew he struggled with quick boxers. This is the rationalisation even from a detractor that Jones was way too quick and defensively slippy for any of those men. No one except for Jones knows what he did or didn't take. No results were ever released. I'm sure you'll pull out the letter which doesn't clearly specify what he tested positive for. We don't know whether The B Sample backed up the A sample either. We don't know if it was merely Ephedrine in Ripped Fuel Jones claimed he took or if he failed a testosterone dihydrotestosterone ratio because of a testosterone or androsterone based substance, the latter used by a recreational gym goes like yourself. Twinlabs the Ripped Fuel manufacturer also sold IOC illegal pro hormones at the time that would trigger a positive test. From the 40s on PEDs were used in sports though. Most WW2 soldiers were packed full of amphetamines. Either way even the amateur Jones would be too quick for any of the men you mentioned. As for Jones turning opponents down, more laughable ignorance. Read up on the politics of the time and stop acting like a general forum poster. As it is the men he fought were better than the men he missed. He beat men who beat the men he missed too.
Who COULD beat a prime Jones? More than a few of the greats. Who would I pick to beat prime Jones? That gets really tough.
The thing is, Hopkins didn't really deserve a rematch. The first fight wasn't particularly close. I was in the crowd that day at RFK Stadium. Jones was barely touched. The only time there is a rematch of a fight that isn't competitive is when a long standing champion gets beaten. Out of respect, he gets a second chance. See Saad Muhammand or Danny Lopez for example. Or the beaten fighter becomes a huge force in the division, and the winner of the previous fight is still in the same division as the guy he beat and wants to clear up who is the best. By 1995-1996 Jones was a Super Middleweight/Light Heaveyweight and there was no need to fight Hopkins to settle anything.
A little known fact about Jones, Jr is that he has the power of prophesy... note this clip from the 90's... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BFOx_j3Nvc
Theoretically, a number of people. But a better question to have asked, would have been - who do people think would have beaten Roy? That would make for a good debate. :good
I respect your opinion. But I find it very interesting that you'd favour Roy over Spinks at LHW, yet Marvin over Roy at MW.
How did Bernard make Roy look stupid in their rematch? It was Bernard who looked stupid. The tough guy from Philly rolling around on the floor from a light rabbit punch that Roy threw in retaliation was embarrassing.
Hagler would have laughed at Roy's so called power? He'd have taken him out in less time than he took out Hearns? How? Why didn't Marvin take out Ray and Duran? Roy was bigger and more powerful than Ray, and he was as fast, if not faster. Like I've mentioned on the Roy vs Hagler thread, you could argue that Marvin was past his peak in 1987, but so was Ray. It seems to me that Ray's movement would always have caused Marvin major issues, as would Roy's. You can't tell me that although Marvin struggled with a peak WW, that he would easily have taken Roy out in a few rounds. It doesn't make sense. :good
Hopkins chased the rematch? Only in 2009 when Roy was shot. How did he chase it before that? By demanding a 50/50 split in 2002, even though Roy had already beaten him, and Roy would had to have dropped weight for a catchweight? The following links tell you everything you need to know about Bernard Hopkins: http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/boxing/stories/2002-07-10-jones-hopkins.htm http://www.doghouseboxing.com/Benz/Benz_1112a08.htm Which marquee matches were offered to Roy, yet were avoided?
Well Roy now has new trainers and hasn't lost so far with his new trainers. Now find out about his current trainers Russ Anber - owner and creator of Rival Boxing Gloves etc http://rivalboxing.us/ The CornerMan Official Trailer - The unbelievable true story of Valrice "WHOP" Cooper. He's RJJ current trainer. Here's the website www.cornermanfilm.com but it only shows the youtube video trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAWjjHCW20U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNFeuohx5ag Roy has also started training with a Gravity Plus suit. Check the video with the person that designed the gravity suit Jim Foster. He has had other boxers/athletes such as Tim Bradley etc. Wear the gravity suit, but the most they could do is only 2-3 rounds. Even with being 46 years old Roy is the only one that can do a full 12 rounds wearing the gravity suit and he's only been using it for about a month. http://www.pnj.com/videos/sports/2015/03/25/70458300/ Here's Roy talking about the gravity suit being his secret weapon to get back in top form right before his last fight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCt-P1kAkns See Jim Foster give Ellie a demonstration with the gravity plus suit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExfUd5riO0g See this interview with Jim Foster talking about his creations and claims of his Gravity Plus suit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFikqoP4Bj8
The gravity suit aint helping his chin...... Roy's chin , just like Lennox Lewis was his achilles heal as shown by yourneyman Lou del Valle......and Jones was shook up from that punch, that was no flash knock down, he was hurt but Del Valle was way to limited to take advantage of it. I am sure that Michael Spinks beats Jones.
Another fight you have not seen......Del valle sucked despite the bogus rankings in that dead division......Hill got out pointed by a ancient Hearns and got feathered by german cream puff Maske.......fire up the dial up.
