Who could beat Manny Pacquiao at 126 pounds with 2009 Pac skills? I don't see anybody of last 40 years who could beat Pac if he stayed at Featherweight. It was great to see Pac move up in weight, but as a result we never got to see a fully skilled Pac at his natural weight.
Marquez, for a start. Actually, there's quite a few who could - guys who I think would, now - but I only think three would. Saddler, Sanchez and Armstrong. Pacquiao's skillset which he showed in the De La Hoya and Cotto fights was incredible. He could out-box Saddler while painting him with ridiculously hard counters, and he could draw the lead from Sanchez - but I highly doubt that, TBH. I think Sanchez still counters him on the way in and ties him up. Armstrong is the only one who'd I'd put money on but this fighter would have a chance vs any featherweight who ever lived. Shame, this verison of Pacquiao never existed.
Marquez should've scored a clear decision over Pacquiao in 2011. He absolutely could've beaten a 2009 Pacquiao.
Could he do it at 126 pounds that's the premise of the thread. Who could beat a fully skilled Pac at his natural weight. That's the actual question presented in the OP.
The question is assumptive. The more polished Pacquiao may have actually been less effective (against certain fighter's) than the balls-to-the-wall version. Against Floyd for instance, Manny's best chance would be to fight like he did as a younger man. If you can't out-think than you have to try and overwhelm.
You cant go balls to the wall when you're fighting guys twice your size which is what Pac was doing ever since he started campaigning at the higher weights.
It's possible, but I disagree. We saw what happened when Pac and Marquez fought at 126 pounds. The moment Pacs left glove remotely touched Marquezs face, Marquez took a 8 count on his ass. Once they moved up and especially at 147 Marquezs larger frame (you see it in the shoulders and back) allowed him to take Pacs punch a lot better and he wasnt taking a seat every time Pacs left hand touched him.
This is true. He had to use the ring more. Work that right hook. Still, in absolute terms, the Pacquiao who swarmed Barrera might just be the most potent version.
