Heard many claims about him lately. Fought just cherry-picks and stiffs. Even Tyson had a better career. Forget about Rocky.

Srsly, the man never lost until age 35 in 48 bouts, and won 21 (TWENTY-ONE !) title-bouts in a row !! Continued to box for 74 bouts overall into his 50s !

Give me your name to replicate that 48-0 and tell me how cushy Larrys opponents were.

Give you a hint: There´s maybe one name, and thats a big if.

Until then, praise #2 All-Time-Great Champion Larry Holmes ;)

Well, it would certainly have to be a fighter from the 70s or later.
Larry's bigger overall point was that boxing had shifted to a black dominated sport, particularly for the HWs. This was different then Luois's or Rocky's era. That is why he was a bit disdainful towards the comparison of their records. Holmes's era had better athletes, more skilled and more dangerous. Holmes made his bones off of guys like Reynaldo Snipes, shavers, Norton, and so on....
I would say for carrying his jockstrap you could certainly put guys like George Foreman, Malik Abdul Aziz, Holyfield and may be even Michael Moorer into that mix

And this is a truly incredible legacy which is why I have Holmes in my top five. But that 48-0 record has to be put into context though. Of his 20 or so world title fight wins Holmes fought

    1. Scott Ledoux
    2. Scott Frank
    3. Bonecrusher Smith ( when he was 14-1 )
    4. Lorenzo Zanon
    5. Tex Cobb
    6. Lucien Rodiriguez
    7. Alfredo Evangelista
    8. Leon Spinks
    9. Ossie Ocasio ( with 13 fights )
    10. Retired Muhammad Ali
    11. Marvis Frazier ( for lineage but no belt )
    12. David Bey ( with 14 fights )
    13. Leroy Jones ( not a bad defense but how much did he weigh for that fight ?)

He struggled with or almost lost to:
    14. Mike Weaver ( when he was 19-8 ) no rematch
    15.Tim Witherspoon ( with 15 fights ) no rematch
    16. Carl Williams ( with 16 fights ) no rematch
    17. Renaldo Snipes No rematch
    18. Earnie Shavers
    19. Ken Norton ( 35 years old )

COMMENTS: hmmm seems like Trevor Berbick and Gerry Cooney were the ONLY fighters who had the all around combination of being prime, highly ranked, with a reasonable number of fights AND who Holmes looked impressive against. And it should be noted that Cooney had only seen 54 seconds of ring action in two years !!!

    But wait!!! There’s more !!!

    He lost to:
Michael Spinks ( in his first fight at heavy. )

    He never fought:

    1. John Tate
    2. Gerrie Coetzee
    3. Michael Dokes
    4. Greg Page ( stripped of a belt for not fighting )
    5. Pinklon Thomas

In addition: Larry Holmes never unified and at one point was even stripped of the only title he had.
Still a good legacy but definitely leaves some things to be desired.

Well since you put it that way.....Tyson Fury, Wlad Klit, Holyfield, and Lennox Lewis could carry his "athletic supporter".

This is pretty fair, but Norton was 34 when they fought & still near his peak.

    Frazier belonged on the list.

The thing Frazier was missing was the kind of overhand right that would down Larry. Fighters with big, BIG left hooks lost to him.

That said, I think FOTC Frazier would drive him nuts and force him to jab and hold to distraction. Joe would be too aggressive and busy, and the FOTC Joe couldn't be outboxed and manhandled like a certain someone against Buster Douglas. He was too fiery, too busy, too inexorable. He also had an Ali-sized heart.

It would be a good fight, with Holmes sweeping the early rounds until Joe warms up, probably landing a couple of big overhands and uppercuts that seriously rock Joe. After that, Larry is doing all he can to keep the man off him, and that's not an easy task. I don't see Joe landing a ton of punches, but I see him getting to that body really hard. Toward the end of the fight Larry gets caught with punches he shouldn't due to his sides hurting bad; I can see him rallying at the end but...too late. A close but unanimous decision for Joe.

I think all the listed fighters could carry Larry's jockstrap, but only Louis and 60s Ali were better heavyweights imo.

I voted for all of them.
It's not difficult to carry a jockstrap.

It would be difficult if they had to use thumbless sparring gloves.
