Who could eat a right hand from Shavers and not be downed?

Tyson, Tua, Ike, McCall, Tucker

 

Against Douglas, Holyfield, and Lewis, Tyson proved how durable he was. It took prolonged beatings by Douglas and Holyfield to finally drop Tyson. Lewis made it look easy-ish, but I don't recall anyone (other than Mercer) taking that many flush shots from Lewis and remaining standing.

I think he'd likely be ok if Shavers got him once. I also agree that there's almost no way Shavers gets him. The way Shavers would put so much of his weight into shots that he'd trip over his own feet when he missed, that's absolute suicide against any decent version of Tyson.

 

Shavers broke his hand punching Stander in the forehead... according to Shavers via biography.

Actually, I have read that also re Shavers breaking his hand.

 

Just a random add on - I was watching a Shavers fight the other day - I think it was vs Roy Williams, not sure. Anyway, Jerry Quarry was commentating and he said, as a matter of fact, that Earnie worked with weights - and that most trainers warned their fighters off same (as we know as at that time) not least to avoid being muscle bound and to prevent the consequence of fast fatiguing.

 

Yes, it really is the way Earnie stepped so much and so often into his punches. Earnie misses and can't reset fast enough to follow up effectively. Compare him to Mike, who was pretty good at changing velocities on his punches, having far better hand speed to begin with.

 

There's be more than people think.....and a lot of them we might barely have or not have heard of.

At the end of the day, does the greatest chin withstand the greatest single punch? I think, perhaps, yes.

Of course, taking numerous power hits over the course of a fight can be a far different story.

And, even the greatest chins can eventually break - not least for the fact that they’ve obviously taken a lot of hits over the course of a career to uphold that chin - an accumulative, degrading effect is likely.

 

Imagine being a heavy bag in the mid 70s while Foreman and Shavers take turns.

Ok on a serious note, Foreman always had a great beard so I go against the grain w ppl saying just 90s Foreman. He had a problem pacing himself in his prime causing fatigue which he fixed in his second coming. Plus, correct me if I'm wrong, 90s version didn't have to go thru sweltering conditions dealing with elusive n cagey fighters in Young n Ali. Lyle had good power so no shame in that either.

This is difficult but Ali is an obvious pick. Chuvalo was getting saved by the ropes against Foreman so clean in the center against an arguably bigger hitter I dunno. Maybe a young Tyson he did have a chin just look at the flush shots a shell of himself took from Lewis. Holyfield MAYBE. Mercer MAYBE. RJJ for sure would......not live afterwards. Would have to brush up on Tua but he did eat Lewis shots.

 

To add, wanting to take a flush shot from Acorn is a su1c1de mission.

 

Pinklon Thomas is a good shout Tyson literally had to nail him to the floor to score the stoppage, Thomas definitely gets underrated for his chin. Even whilst he was a shell of himself neither Bowe, Morrison, Holyfield, could take him off his feet.

 

Muhammad Ali did on Sept 29 1977, it was televised live on NBC. In fact it was Earnie Shavers who almost hit the canvas in round 15 from exhaustion.

 

Yeah...wonderful...and look how Ali ended up!
