I know that Mercado knocked him down twice in their first fight which went to a draw, but the way he shook off all of Jones' big punches was very impressive. Was he ever floored on an other occasion?

The only other time Hopkins hit the canvas was when Echols caught him with a right hand on the break. Since it was on the break, it wasn't called an official kd.

Aside from those two instances, he's never been down.

My mind may be betraying me but I don't remember that happening? I remember him sparking Echols right back with a right hand! X often uses it as an example that he has a good chin.

Echols dropped him on the break.

Are they talking about the first fight? I'm sure I have both on dvd.

Mercado definitely hurt him with one of the knockdowns (can't remember which). Bad decision too, Mercado deserved the duke. Another Don King manufactured draw. :-(

    Right...

And the fact that the ref missed two Hopkin's knockdowns, and that the fight was held in Mercardo's hometown indicates that the deck was stacked in X's favor...:D

That must have been the first fight. I have the rematch and don't recall Echols dropping him on the break.

I do remember Hopkins hitting the canvas, but it was a WWF bodyslam. His right shoulder was injured badly, and he could well have taken the easy way out. But Hopkins came back to dominate Echols with one hand after he continued, eventually finishing him during the 10th.

It was the first fight, not seen it.

Big deal? Lewis fought McCall in his hometown, that didn't benefit him when he was floored and the ref waived it off. I'm sure if King wasn't Ollie's promoter the ref would have let it go on (i.e. Holmes-Snipes). I've seen many champions in a far worse state allowed to continue.

ps. Two of the judges were Yanks, obviously one voted for Hopkins. The other one couldn't bring himself to vote against a 'Don Draw'. Even Ring thought Hopkins was lucky to draw, as did British Boxing News. Maybe a secret underground mafia from Quito bribed them too. :good

pps. It wasn't his hometown, just his country (and he was based in the US anyway), but I don't expect anything less from the North American brigade. :-(

ppps. Funny, but if it was a 'homer', why didn't they just give the decision to Mercado? :?

    1. Butch Lewis was Hopkins' promoter when the fight took place...not Don King.

    2. The were rumors flying about that at least one of the judges had been beaten, and threatened at gunpoint. That would certainly influence the opinions of the judges.

    3. Let's not get into semantics. All of Equador was Mercado's backyard as far as that fight was concerned...and the crowd cheered whenever Segundo even thought of throwing a punch. That, alone would be enough to influence the opinion of a judge.

    4. Again, the referee missed two obvious knockdowns of Mercado during the course of the fight.

KO Magazine scored the fight well in favor of Hopkins, even with the knockdowns.

It was a fun fight...and I guess you could make the case that it was close enough to call a draw (although I scored it in X's favor).

But, if anyone got robbed, it was Hopkins. Simple as that.

Where did you read these rumours* and why would they have to beat a South American judge (which I think he was) to vote for Mercado?

It was a joint Lewis/King promotion actually.

So KO have also been impartial have they? Wow. An American mag said a Yank was jobbed. Hey, that's amazing.

Ring, Boxing News = Mercado 2
    KO = Hopkins 1.

And let's face it, the only one's who you can't called biased there was Boxing News.

    * A Hopkins websiter/forum perhaps?

    1. It was, apparently, one of the American judges who was beaten, Conteh. Just as it was a South American judge who scored the fight for Mercado (shock! surprise! sarcasm!)

And, those rumors were reported in the RING magazine (in 2004, if I recall correctly. The DLH-Hopkins preview issue.)

And, even though it was a joint promotion, it should be noted that Lewis was Hopkin's promoter. King, it should be noted, was acting as Mercado's promoter at the time.

So...maybe it was a Don draw after all.:D

    2. Sometimes, magazines get it wrong. Ring's had some pretty sketchy scores...if you'd be so kind as to post the article, it would be appreciated :good

But, it just goes to show that opinions were split as to who won the fight.

    3. Again...the official missed two knockdowns...and, in either case, had they counted, Hopkins would have won the fight. In both cases, the kd's were legitimate, and should have counted.

I scored the fight for Hopkins...you obviously didn't.

    But, it's hardly a robbery.

It was an American judge that was beaten, which one? The one that voted for a draw? Yeah, they must have done a real number on him. :yep

Oh, and the 'other' judge was American too I think (yeah, a real homer this when the away guy has two of his countrymen scoring) and he voted for Hopkins of course (shock! surprise! sarcasm!). ;)

Well, maybe he voted for Hopkins because...

    wait for it...

    wait for it...

    not quite yet...

(Sorry...I've always wanted to do a suspenseful post like this. )

...because Hopkins actually won the damned fight. I thought he did when I saw the fight, and so did a lot of other observers.
