Yeah, it wasn't a robbery, I just thought i'd throw that one in to get it going. ;) Still, Mercado edged it I think.

It just pisses me off that the majority of you guys take reports in American magazines as gospel and pass off any Yank fighting away as a 'homer'. Most of those ****ers hardly ever have to fight in someone else's country and yet they get all this sympathy. Bull**** really.

For the record: I don't believe in 'Hometown draws' at all, unless the promoter(s) have influence on it (ala King) and they probably know it'll be scored a draw beforehand (Fenech-Nelson for instance). If a judge was going to be biased to the home fighter i'm pretty sure he could make a 113-113 card into a 114-113 card. 'Homer' judges give the local guy the WIN not the DRAW.

I have to say I'm amazed at that bull**** story concerning the judge was beaten to ****- and it came out about 10 years later? Sad, that they have to resort to such shite. :-(

That was actually in a collection of quotes that related to B-Hop's career. It was more than likely uttered many years before.

Ok fair enough. I might check it out myself. You know who said it? Because it seems and odd thing to say when the judge (apparently) beaten only scored it a draw. Sounds like the kind of thing all-time sore loser Gil Clancy might have said when one of his fighters was beaten. :yep

Talking about judges. What about Hagler and his camping refusing Harry Gibbs as a judge for the Leonard fight. The replacement for Gibbs was none other than Guerra, who scored the fight 118-110 for Leonard.

Gibbs later watched the Hagler v Leonard fight on TV, and guess who he scored it for, Hagler.

The reasons why the Hagler camp protested to the appointment of Gibbs was that he was a British official, and Hagler never trusted Brits after the mayhem inside the ring when he beat Minter in London to win to the title.

Don't you think the "...and I scored it for Hagler too" was just a bit too predictable?

Gibbs usually favoured smart boxers. ;)

    I forget, to be honest.

It may have been Butch Lewis himself, as I recall...which, of course, makes its veracity highly suspect. If that's the case, then you're well within your rights to disregard it.

But, I'll check that out when I look up the magazine in a bit.

Thats up for arguement. Maybe the worst mistake Marvin ever made. I'm pretty sure Gibbs gave an honest opinion on his scorecard. As you say, it may well have been sour grapes.

Well if they had one other judge on side a draw from this guy guarantee's no title change.

    Conteh,

First you claim it was a Don King draw in Hopkin's favor. You didn't know that he was being promoted by Lewis.

You didn't know about the judge being attacked/threatened. I heard about those rumors over ten years ago. Then you try to claim that it was the South American judge.

Interesting how you choose to ignore the fact that Mercado was down twice, same way the ref of the fight did.

Many of your posts are filled with insightful analysis. But in this exchange between you and Drew, both the doctor and Larry Hazard are rushing into the thread to stop this discussion.

I did know he was promoted by Lewis, I never enter these type of discussions without knowing this kind of information, believe me. King co-promoted the event, I'm saying it was possibly a manufactured draw. Again, this judge was (apparently) beaten....but his card came out even anyway. So, he was beaten to give an 'even' card (something I was saying I thought was possibly manufactured) or he wasn't beaten at all (more realistic). The fight was very close, even Hopkins said at the end "I thought I won it by a point", so NEUTRAL observers had it even or a point either way too. :good

ps. I did enjoy the Larry Hazzard/doctor bit nonetheless. :yep

I'd still like a source. So what if I didn't know this and so what if i presumed the guy who was 'beaten' was South American? As I said they didn't do a very good job convincing this judge as he had it 'even'. Unless that was the idea...something I actually said. :good

ps. It sounds like yet more Yank bull**** sore losing to me anyway. Don't take everything you read in American magazines as gospel, they're not actually a nation famous for being gracious in defeat.
