You misunderstood my post.... Hopkins changed HIS style from the high output, swarmer to a defensive counter puncher (to put both vaguely)....right around the Johnson/Jackson fights. Not Johnson changing his for Roy.... And as for how to beat Jones...you are aware that Johnson fully credits Bernard for telling him exactly how to beat Roy? (Glen's words not mine)....and he also said that by far Hopkins was the best fighter he has ever fought....saying that even watching his fight vs him on video he still had no idea how he could have won even a round. High praise if you ask me. Seriously tho...go back and read my post again...you will see what I mean. And giving the fight to Jones was an easy choice. But there were quite a few people that attempted to give it to Hopkins, even on the original HBO telecast......I believe Michael Spinks was one of them....:nut But just because a fight is clear, doesnt make it a blowout. And the 7-5 (I meant 8-4, my mistake......I apologize....most had it 8-4, dumb mistake) cards I referred to were all three judges, my own card, most of ringside, as well as most of the people I have seen on this site. Again, it was an easy fight to score, but not the lopsided (9-3 or WORSE as you said???) victory that most people attempting to discredit Bernard (and Im not saying you are or you arent....just pointing out the trend) like to paint it to be. And if you watch the fight, the announcers MANY times stated that Bernard could have easily won the fight if he had just been a little more aggressive at times....seeing as how it was still close and he wasnt as aggressive as he normally was.
As to the orginal point that I was making... Al Devito (who scored the fight for Hopkins) was apparently the judge who was mugged. Paraphrasing what Lewis said: " It was like there was a stage of martial law...everywhere you went, there were people in uniforms carrying AK-47's and Uzis. And everyone was hostile toward us because we were fighting their guy." Now...the fight was close, but the knockdowns that Hops scored in the 3rd and 6th weren't counted, and the South American judge scored the final round even (that round was incredibly lopsided in favor of X, and could easily have been called 10-8). So...while I agree with Contehs' point about hysteria that can surround these types of situations, there are, occasionally, fights that live up to the hysteria. This may, or may not, have been one of them.
I've just read your second post. 8-4 it was then. Still, most boxing reports said how "disappointed they were with Jones", despite the easy victory.
In most circumstances you are totally right...but go watch that fight. The four the Bernard won were CLEARLY his. The 8 that Roy won were CLEARLY his. Though noone truely ever dominated the fight.
8 clear rounds to 4 is enough for me (it's the same margin I had Whitaker-Chavez). Jones looked like he was on cruise control throughout anyway. I don't know what HBO or whoever said but on ITV they said "there's absolutely no doubt about the winner" and when the scores were announced "somehow they managed to find 4 rounds for Hopkins". :yep
You need to find some space in your heart for a good old dose of Hopkins love you do. Embrace the man, the fighter and the legend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I try. But then posts like 'Jones-Hopkins I was close' appear. Very average performance from Hopkins (Jones wasn't great either). Hopkins spent virtually all the fight waiting, thinking, what Jones was going to do next rather than make his mark on the fight. One of the easiest ways I've seen a fighter earn his first title strap.
I see you keep 'honoring' the dutch. Not really good sportmansship but it was funny to see, especially when there is such a rivalry. I always liked Frank.
Yep. We used to spend most of our holidays in Holland as a kid (my dad's worked there for 25 years on-and-off), so I'm a big fan of the country- and their football of course. :good Yeah, bad sportsmanship from Frank. Still, hilarious.
JOnes beat Hopkins with ease. You could give Hops a few of the last rounds but that was only ebcause Jones had clearly eased off the gas knowing the fight was won.
Was anti-Americanism mixed in with the mother's milk in the neighborhood where you grew up? It's only unfair when it happens to Yanks? You think that Americans like to see foreign fighters get jobbed out of decisions they earned? You think that we weren't just as pissed about verdicts like Lewis-Holy 1?
