The Nunn and McCallum "ducks" have more substance than the Pryor one. Nunn, McCallum, Kalambay, etc. all were top middleweights around the 88-89 period (Nunn stretched Kalambay in 1989 inside a round). Leonard was fighting around this range (168 for the Lalonde fight, 163 for the Hearns rematch), and fans did want to see him fight Nunn, but Leonard took part in much more lucrative bouts with Hearns and Duran in 1989. Money was the main factor, but they were also safer bouts (or believed to be, as Hearns was viewed by many as shot in 1989).

Pryor, however, had his chance. Maybe I am mistaken, but I never heard about Nunn turning down a career-high payday from Leonard.

True but you can make a case that Leonard wasn't the same prime fighter he once was at welterweight. And back then i think Leonard deserves to fight for bigger money with little risk since again he isn't the same fighter he once was in 89.

Both. Leonard for not taking it and Pryor for not having a proper enough team to secure better fights for him as he rises. Then again I'm glad Leonard didn't take it considering the cheating tactics Pryor displayed against Arguello.

How did Leonard not take it? Pryor is the one who rejected the offer.

On the one hand, it feels like the Hawk should have taken it so we could have seen a ring overflowing with skill and speed in what surely would have been a memorable contest.

On the other, Ray may well have ruined him (to the tune of capping off his career earnings with that $500k as someone half-jokingly suggested earlier) and we'd have never had the first Arguello classic to argue about...

Oh, Leonard definitely wasn't the same fighter in the late 80s as he had once been in the late 70s/early 80s.

Pretty much he was never the same after the first of his pro retirements (I think the first) in 1982 after beating Finch.

Going in to the first Arguello/Pryor fight Alexis was the favorite. Think about that, and do the ****ing math!

**** Aaron Pryor. He doesn't deserve to even be in the same building with the greats.

I never understood this. Ray was fighting everyone. As a matter of fact the amount of guys he fought who were great Benitez,Duran,Hearns in less than 2 years was rare. How did he have the time or energy? Simply, he did not need Pryor. Had he continued in 1982 he was going to fight Marvin.

    Bump.

Why do people blame Leonard for it not happening when Pryor is the one who rejected the fight, and a career high payday?

Is it that whole "press conference boxing fan" thing, where people think fights are made in interviews and not over contracts with lawyers?

I don't know. Maybe you should ask Benny lol. But for real Leonard is a legend that has fought the best and beat the best. If Pryor was offer a career high pay day but rejected proved easily that it's Pryor to blame.

Pryor should be thankful the fight did not happen. He got himself in position to make his bones against Arguello. Leonard would have beat Pryor half to death, and Arguello would have had far less interest in Pryor if that happened.
