pryor would of been a tough fight for anyone at any weight, but Leonard, Duran, and Hearns could all match him power wise. The Hawk did have an amateur win over Hearns, but that was before Hearns developed into a puncher in the pros. I'm wondering why he didn't challenge Tommy or Roberto in the pros? The Hawk was a great entertainer man, but he would of gotten his first losses against those guys. According to him he had acouple of sparring wars with SRL and of all the times they came out 50-50. He should of moved up from 140lbs is all I have to say if he really wanted it so bad. Beat acouple of 147lbers like Cuevas or Palomino , which would of been another war, and then cause the public to demand a fight. But he never made an effort or any noise at 147.

    :lol::rofl:patsch

How old are some of you? Were you even watching Boxing at this time? Pryor was chasing SRL around the country showing up at all his post fight press conferences demanding a fight. Leonard wanted NOTHING to do with Pryor.

Some of you are trying to have revisionist history. Leonard would only fight you on his terms ie: what weight class he wanted, his gloves, his ring size, his location etc.

Pryor actually had an offer to fight Duran, but he had all sorts of managerial issues (one of his managers got arrested for embezzlement).

By the time he cleared up some of the issues, the offer for the Duran fight was off the table.

Duran against Pryor and also Ayala would've been fun fights.

Duran-Pryor actually was supposed to be @ 150, but I'd give Pryor a better shot at beating Duran than beating Ray & Tommy at 147.

And Leonard offered Pryor a fight, for a career high payday. Pryor said "more money, please".

Anybody can demand and call out for a fight. That's just talk, what matters is when you sign on the dotted line. Pryor got $50k to fight Cervantes for the title. A few months later, he's offered ten times that for a fight with Ray, plus all the exposure in the world, and he declines.

The revisionist history comes from HBO with their Legendary Myths series and the people who buy into their ****.

Are you sure you are not confusing Roy Jones with Aaron Pryor?

SRL wanted nothing to do with the guy. At all. Pryor got 1.5 and 1.6 mil for his 2 fights with Arguello. Why would he take 500k to fight SRL at about the same point and time?

Its funny how people refuse to let the facts get in way of a good story.

Obviously Pryor was not confident of beating Ray or he would have taken the offer...which as Thread Stealer has pointed out ad nauseam was a **** load more than what he was making at the time and quite frankly a **** load more than what he was worth given his profile at the time.

Pryor didn't fight Arguello until late 1982, almost two years after the offer from Leonard (in early 1981).

I've already said in the past that given the fact that Pryor got paid more to fight a more winnable fight in Arguello, that I don't necessarily blame him for turning down the Leonard offer. But the HBO Legendary Myths **** on how Leonard and the other WWs being so scared of this little 135/140 guy in Pryor is nonsense. He had offers to fight both Leonard and Duran. $500k was FAARR more than what Pryor was getting at the time, having just been paid about a tenth of that to win a world title just a few months before that. That's how much Pryor was getting around that time, to put his box office appeal in perspective.

Benitez and Duran were much bigger names than Pryor then. Benitez and Duran (first fight) were getting a bit over a mil to fight Leonard. A longer reigning champ, but smaller name, champ in Kalule was getting $250k to fight Leonard. What kind of monetary offer would one expect Pryor to get from Leonard in late 1980/early 1981?

From what I can gather it wasnt around the same time. The offer was made at least a year before the Arguello fights.

Pryor also turned down $750K to fight Duran...I think he turned down pretty good money to fight Mamby.

After the Arguello fight he went back the fighter for purses around and under the $500K mark, even after his profile was at an alltime high with his two televised wars with Alexis.

People got in Pryor's ear, which caused a managerial tug of war that pretty much killed his money making potential...and Aaron was as much to blame for this.

The money path didn't no favor for Leonard to fight Pryor, the big pay days where against the Fav 5 at the time....now...Pryor at 140lbs match power against any of the Fav 5

If that's true (and you believe anything in Legendary Nights) then I have to blame Pryor. Understand this is sadly just from what ive heard and now read as at my age I dont remember boxing until the late 80's. But if you take Pryor from Legendary Nights basically saying he woulda done anything to fight bigger names and especially Sugar Ray, then why not take half a million dollars 30 years ago, beat the man and then get the even bigger paydays yourself. Half a million dollars i'll fight Sugar Ray Leonard right now..lol..though I couldnt make weight.

The press would have massacred Leonard for fighting a nobody from a smaller weight class.
