Ok so RJJ had moved up a weight and considered Calzaghe not worth it finacially Hopkins Ducked Calzaghe There seems to be a large group here that beleive calzaghe avoided all other top fighters so please tell me who he ducked. Also remeber he was the champion so its only really other champions he should realisticly have gone after, everyone else should have gone after him.
ok Sven, As a champion would you want to fight a person that 100% wont fight away from home and is reknown for dodgy home decisions?
he ducked glen johnson. thats it. sven ottke calzaghe never ducked as team ottke wanted no part of calzaghe, never ever mentioning his name, albeit warren never ever made a serios offer to team ottke to remotley get the fight on . another name that could be thrown at calzaghe is echols , calzaghe took on brewer and not echols. but it is not these 2 opponents that is the problem , it is the fact that warren matched him with so much garbage instead of fighters like lucas/catley/beyer etc etc which would have cost warren more money. he should have talen on pavlik instead of jones in his last fight, but fighting jones was understandable.
Glen johson is no arguing, once maybe the escuse holds but not multiple times. SO i agree with that one.
probally a smart move considering Joe did not have good KO power and Sven would not fight outside of germany.
Doesn't matter if you have good KO power or not if you're in a fight where hitting to the face is liable to be called a foul...
Yeah the ones who say Johnson have a case. Calzaghe had excuses but you can't prove whether he was really injured or just afraid. Beyer, Ottke, and Lucas all blatantly ducked Calzaghe. Dawson he avoided...not ducked. He theoretically could have fought him and proved a lot, but think about it: Nobody likes watching Dawson, there wouldn't be a ton of money in it. Also, Calzaghe was on the decline and he knew it. Add to that, Dawson is a tough fight for anybody. If Calzaghe had continued to fight, then we could say he was ducking Dawson (like Hopkins is). But since he retired, all that means is Calzaghe decided to call it a day rather than push his luck.
what is sad for me about calzaghe ducking glen johnson is IMO the fact that johnsons style is made for calzaghe to look good against. johnson stays in the pocket comes to fight , has only average hand and footspeed and would not look to spoil , the fight would have been good for the spectator/good for tv and calzaghe would have shone in the fight IMO.
He's no 'all time great' what does it matter. First of all your in no position to say who he ducked and who he did not, your word is hardly a reliable source. Only those around him a the time know who he ducked and one of those is Frank Warren his promoter for majority of his career. Mr Warren has publicly stated the numerous amount of times Mr Calzaghe pulled out of fights, so theres a reliable source. That said hardcore followers of Mr Calzaghe could argue Mr Warren has his own agenda due to the recent history between the two. So on that basis we you can only go on actual facts, which is the people he actually fought during his tenure. So with that in mind there will always be a case of Mr Calzaghe not mixing it up with finest the middleweight(s) division had to offer, therefore in MY opinion will always be an 'average Joe'.
Hang on, I was just trying to read the thread when some random comes along and describes Frank Warren as a 'reliable source' and now I can't see to read anymore :rofl:rofl
