Margarito blew up and gain popularity by two instances. #1 because of the claim that Mayweather ducked him. #2 because he defeated Cotto in that incredible fight. Before those 2 instances only real die hard fans of the sport even heard of him. If he would have fought and beat Forrest or Mayorga or Spinks or Judah for a title then he would have had more of a case.

If Mayweather defeats Margo then there would have been no claim of Mayweather ducking him. Margo's popularity would then depend on how well he performed vs Mayweather and what he did with this career afterward.

If Mayweather beats Margo in a boring shut out and Margo does nothing more with his career other then a couple wins here and losses there then nobody would really care about that fight since there would be no real build up because there was never the claim of Mayweather ducking him and turning down 8mil.

 

Besides Baldo was older and Margo was pretty young. You could always fight Margo later, but Baldo fight had a limited window. Same reason I said why Pac fighting Mosley makes more sense * business wise* then fighting Berto. Berto you can always fight later as he builds himself up. Mosley had a limited window because of his age.

The ONLY way you can make a case for ducking against a fighter is if there is a more competitive AND lucrative opponent available. You also have to couple this with the "competitive" opponent staying unbeaten while the money fight is completed. Now examine the list:

*Margarito - ODLH was the money fight. In the meantime Marg went life and death with Clottey, lost to Williams, and finally got back on top after beating Cotto.

*Cotto - Wasn't in the picture until 2007. First big name win at WW was ZJ. Two fights later lost to Marg.

*Young Mosley - He was called out fight was never made. Why? Who knows.

There is nobody who was ducked!

*Paul Williams - Solid case can be made for ALL WWs ducking him. Especially after he beat Margo.

*Josh Clottey - I think he was avoided by many and Pac fixed the fight against him.

 

He called out Tszyu clown and ever Larry Merchant said Kostya didn't want it!

Mayweather fought Mitchell about six months after the Hatton/Tszyu fight which means that Kostya was retired when Mayweather/Mitchell happened. There's no way that Mayweather could have ducked Tszyu. They were never really free to fight each other when they were both in the same weight class. The "Mayweather ducking Tszyu" meme is revisionist history that started at the height of the "Mayweather is ducking" Margarito controversy.


BTW on topic, you're a ****ing idiot if you don't acknowledge the fact every fighter that Mayweather has gotten a serious amount of **** for "ducking" (Margo, Cotto when he was at 147, Pac) was signed to Top Rank after Mayweather left the promotion.
