I also saw on youtube the fight where RJJ beats Liles during the Olympic trials. RJJ was outspeeding Liles but he seemed much smaller than Liles (a southpaw like Tarver) and I can imagine where he might have been caught in some other fight previous to that one...

Fabulous Frankie was a very slick and very quick southpaw like Tarver who gave RJJ all he could handle. Not to mention he was a humble and classy guy from the Salt City like me. The judges saw it differently than I did.

    here's some info from boxrec:

    Record: 121-13
1986 National Golden Gloves - Light Welterweight Champion (beat Victor Levine in the final)
1986 Goodwill Games (Moscow) - Light Welterweight Bronze Medalist (lost to Igor Ruzhnikov)
1987 National Golden Gloves - Light Middleweight Champion
1987 Junior World Championship - Light Middleweight, lost to Andy Liebling
1988 National Golden Gloves - Light Middleweight Bronze Medalist (lost a 3-round decision to Gerald McClellan)
1988 Olympic Trials - defeated Frank Liles twice to go to the Olympics
Light Middleweight Silver Medalist for the United States at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.

he beat tarver by split dec at the sunshine state game in '82 when they were both 13. from what i understand, liles is the only fighter to stop jones as an amateur.

jones is one of only 4 u.s. fighters ever to lose in the opening round of the olympic trials (double elimination) and make the olympic team. the others are floyd mayweather, jr., evander holyfield, and gary russell, jr. (russell passed out trying to make weight and never fought in the '08 olympics)

Among others he lost to Igor Ruzhnikov, John Reid, Andy Liebling, Frank Liles, Gerald McLellan and the dodgy hometown decision against Park Si-Hun.

Ah, K Mac beat me to the punch!

It would be interesting to find out who the other seven losses were to.

back in the 80s, the olympic trials were tougher to win than the olympics. jones had to come through the losers bracket to make the team but then breezed to his robbery in the gold medal final. u.s. amateur boxing was deep. not so much now.

Jones also won the 1984 US Jr Olympics as a BANTAMWEIGHT!

He lost in the Sunshine State Games finals in '80 and '81 and the Florida State Jr Olympic finals in '83 and '85.

I heard he lost to Tim Littles in the 1987 US Nationals finals and to Frank Liles in the 1988 US Nationals finals.

Many of his losses were in the Jr ranks. The only Sr's to beat him legit in '87-'88 were Littles, Liles and McClellan - all three were ranked above Jones yet Jones went to Olympics somehow.
