Weren't some of the clear losses against guys at least 3-4 years older ?

When you're 16-17 and you fight a 20-21 year old...the difference in strength and power is normally much more evident than say a 20 year old fighting a 24 year old.

Yeah he was 17 when he lost to Ruzhnikov and Reid, and jumped two weight classes to face Liebing when he was 18. Then he came into his own at 156 with a new, extremely relaxed style. No weight issues.

At 139, he was more of an aggressive hooker who stayed in the pocket.

No. Just no. McClellan was inferior in every way to Jones as a pro.

OK so we have the following names :

    Igor Ruzhnikov
    John Reid
    Andy Liebling
    Frank Liles
    Gerald McLellan
    Park Si-Hun

Does anyone recall any other guys that beat Jones in the ams ?

Yup couldn't have been to strong of a kryptonite as it seems in their ameteur bout Jones hurt the Gman pretty bad where he felt the effects even after beating Jones .

McClellan was taller, rangier, had much heavier hands, a much stronger chin and much better jab. McClellan also had a better hook to the body (snappy, sneaky, pinpoint), though Jones's was awesome too (raw power, fast). And McClellan also had better timing, better footwork. He was an amazing talent. Jones was more reflex-based, more athletically gifted and extraordinary. The devastating power of Jones came from tendon strength and range of motion in the shoulders.

Including power. McClellan's KO record is manufactured - he was specifically matched up against people who were either mediocrities or against good fighters on the way down with little punch resistance.

Gerald McClellan beat Jones at amateur level and Roy vowed afterwards never to fight McClellan as a pro! Also Frankie Liles beat Roy as an amateur.

These threads from 10 years ago when bumped seem a lot better than those from today...genuine posters interested in boxing.

I believe he might have lost to "Kidfire" Parks also, If my memory holds, Kidfire was a HUGE puncher, first boxer to die of AIDS.

I believe he lost to Julian Jackson in the amateurs also didn't he? Might be wrong on this one. Wouldn't surprise me though Jackson was a devastating puncher.. just wasn't the most skilled.
