And what about his double failure to stop Bert Whitehurst , a man whom was stopped twice by Archie Moore prior to that , yet Liston twice failed to stop him. He was also stopped another two times prior to his Liston fights by much lesser men and afterward by Eddie Machen and Santo Amonti. But Liston could never stop him. Same for Eddie Machen , was stopped inside 1 by Ingemar Johnson , yet Liston failed over 12. Your ultimate knockout artist : Sonny Liston
Willie Pep : Aside from a decision over Sandy Saddler who stopped him 3 times ? I just browsed through his record and discovered that almost every one of his wins is a decision against a bum , repeat : (1) decision (2) vs bum
what language does this guy speak?i also have trouble understanding him.all hes doing is making a case for his fighter i think
Liston was a feared fighter, he had ties with the mob, he had been in jail, etc. The bottom line is he was a very intimidating person to most people. Now, I think Liston was a great fighter... but none of the above means shlt to me. It shouldn't matter to any of you guys either. I don't rank guys based on how mean they looked or how many people they beat up outside of the ring. It doesn't impress me. Liston turned pro in 1953 and weighed in at 200 1/2 Lbs, his opponent was Don Smith who weighed in at 179lbs. Liston won by 1st round KO. Liston stood 6'1" with an 84" reach (a very unusual reach for his height) and weighed 213-218Lbs during his HW title reign. As mentioned above, Liston fought the following people: '54 x2 Johnny Summerlin W8 and WSD8 '54,'55,'56 Marty Marshall LSD8 (suffered broken jaw), KO6, and W10 '58-'59 Liston beat trial horses and gatekeeper types like Wayne Bethea KO1, Frankie Daniels KO1, Bert Whitehurst W10 x2, Ernie Cab KO8, Mike DeJohn KO6, Cleveland Williams KO3, Nino Valdes KO3, and Willi Besmanoff KO7 among others. The most notable being the 3rd round KO of Williams. '60-'61 Liston beat Howard King x2 KO8 and KO3. He beat Williams again, KO2. He also beat Roy Harris KO1, Zora Folley KO3 (a great win in 1960), Eddie Machen W12 (also considered a great win in 1960) and Albert Westphal KO1. The best wins were the wins over highly ranked Machen and Folley. '62-'65 Liston fought Patterson x2 and Ali x2. He stopped Patterson in the 1st round x2. He was stopped in 7 by Ali and then in 1 round of their rematch. '66-'70 Liston fought guys like Henry Clark KO7, Sonny Moore x2, KO3 x2, Leotis Martin LKOby9 in a back and forth battle, and Chuck Wepner KO10. Liston died in 1970. Liston never beat an all-time great HW who was also big and tall like Ali, Foreman, Holmes, or Lewis... but how many ever did? Liston was stopped 3 times and beat by a very small HW in his other loss (who also broke his jaw). He did avenge the loss to Marty Marshall, 2-1 (1) vs. Marshall lifetime. He did fight Ali again but we all know what happened there. He was well past prime in his final loss. I wonder how he would do vs. big talented HWs like Foreman, Bowe, V. Klitschko, and others. Liston was used to being the bully in the ring... what happens when he gets manhandled?
Wimpsy wasn't so wimpy was he? How about Mike "The Bounty" Hunter? He clearly beat Hall of Famer Dwight Qawi in 1990, W12. He also- Drew with future top ranked CW James Pritchard very early in both fighters careers, 1987. Lost by SD8 to Levi Billups and lost a close 8 rounder to Andre Smith in 1987. He beat future WBC HW champ Oliver McCall, W10, in 1988. He beat former WBC HW champ Pinklon Thomas, W10, in 1990 He beat Jimmy Thunder, KO4, in 1990. He beat former WBA CW champ Ossie Ocasio, W10, in 1990. He lost a questionable decision to Frans Botha in 1990, LMD8. He dropped Botha as well. He also beat Tyrell Biggs, Alexander Zolkin, Cecil Coffee, Buster Mathis Jr. (later changed to a NC), and others. As a matter of fact the only clear loss on his record was his last fight, LKOby5 to Brian Nielsen when he was 187 years old in 1996. Ok, so he wasn't even 40 but he was way past prime. Hunter was a good boxer with a good chin. He faced some big strong guys who could punch like McCall, Thunder, Biggs, etc. he also outboxed good boxers like Biggs, Mathis, and others.
If Liston had a chance to adapt to the times, and if he was still connected to the mob, been to jail and smashed faces with his sledge hammer fists then I would say the intimidation factor would have an effect on Klitschko.
Willie Pep : A KO (so untypical 4 him) over d guy who KOd Saddler , a decision win over Saddler (who stopped him 3 times , but then Saddler was very dirty some say) , a decision over Paddy DeMarco . in 241 fights , he managed 2 stop his opponents (not just KOs) 65 times and get stopped 6 times , d thing is , who did he even fight ?
