He did do well with who he fought and I mentioned that. But, it still remains, whether people want to see it or not....he was protected to a certain extent. Bowe in the early 90s, before Tyson went to prison was just starting to come into his own and was alot more highly thought of at that time then alot of the people Tyson did fight. Same with Mercer...same with a few others. I wasnt attempting to rip Tyson, I thoroughly enjoyed his reign...he was dominant in ways that very few (if any) have...so dominant in fact that even tho he never defeated a great fighter in their prime, he is still considered one of the 10 greatest HWs of all time. What I was trying to do is put his reign into better perspective. As well as his all time ranking and how he would be favored or not going head to head with other ATGs. (as I said, he would have a punchers chance vs ANYONE EVER...but if we are talking favorites....he wouldnt be expected to beat those fighters...)
No one. Muhammad Ali would beat him fairly easily with some rough spots. You absolutely needed consistent strategy to break down a figher like Ali - Tyson didn't have it. Although prime for prime he could beat your boy Lewis. 50/50 The significance of the 2002 fight has heavily waned - as it should have. As for the guy that said Tyson can't hurt Foreman - who are you kidding? Think about it. Foreman admitted that Frazier hurt in with the left hook too. If you mean seriously hurt / KD - Tyson could do it. Some fighters take certain types of punches better than others (Ali's Achilles heel is left hook, Lewis' Achilles heel it is right hand, for Tyson it is the uppercut, etc). Tyson had EVERY KIND of punch imagineable because he was one of the greatest punchers of all time. His right hand alone had multiple variations e.g. straight, lead (they are NOT the same), hook, overhand and could land it with blinding speed. Foreman was susceptible to getting staggered by the fast punches of Ali. Although Tyson's speed was different from Ali's in terms of effect due to reach, in this case the two would have the same effect.
Ali wouldn't get out of the 1st round. Tyson was bigger, stronger, more powerfull, and much faster than Frazier! Ali would of been overwhelmed!
He also was shorter, wasnt half as smart of a fighter, didnt have the same chin, wasnt nearly as polished as far as skills go, you could keep going. If every fight was won by the bigger, stronger, more powerful guy...fighters like Pernell Whitaker and SRL and PBF wouldnt exist. And lets not forget, George Foreman was also bigger, stronger, more powerful and much faster than Frazier and what did Ali do to him? Hell what would Foreman do Tyson for that matter? :admin
Tyson has never beat anyone to suggest that he could beat a prime Ali, and Ali has never beat anyone to suggest that he would beat a prime Tyson. Both were very unique fighters, there were not others like them.
Its a shame Tyson was self destructive as I feel his greatness would have been without question and his achievments even higher had he the mentalality of someone like Lennox Lewis or Holyfield. Strong sound minds, thinkers. Not hot headed raging animals like Tyson could become when he flipped. That said, he only showed his true colours...without boxing he'd just have been the same person he showed signs of being from time to time (off the rails, mentally unstable). Tyson did all he could in the division at the time. after he came out of prison, he was never the same. And I think like many before him, he got satisfied once he became wealthy ie the hunger wasn't there the same as it once was on the way up and when he first got to the top. After a while it was all about money and financial security...despite the leeches that he had around him. He said after his last fight that he "didnt have the fighting guts anymore", and if he was honest hadnt had them for years! He got rich and lost his hunger. didnt have the character of many great champions before him ie strong mental character and a passion to win when it wasnt going his way.
Tyson was HBO's hope for drawing. He had an exciting style but if we are honest people who understand the sweet science like Uysk would have humiliated him. Tyson is still a hero for his achievements but let's not fool ourselves.
Anthony Joshua was getting outboxed by 40 year old Povetkin before he gassed like he always does, got destroyed by Ruiz, and hung on to a thread against the fossil remains of Klitschko, and had Klitschko had Steward in his corner that fight would've been over in 6. Usyk gives almost any ATG trouble but lets not get carried away
Honestly you make good points generally but for me Usyk is a breath of fresh air to heavyweight boxing and even you have to admit Tyson was protected by the HBO hype machine. Povetkin was winning that fight for me also and honestly AJ has had the protection of referee's his whole career. It would have been a classic fight between them no doubt and it's a shame it could never happen for us fans.
