He lost 3 rds against Lewis on many peoples scorecards, the associated press had it level, i had it level, the judges had it 4-2 but thats a one round difference in reality, a swing round, and when you look at the judges when did anyone ever agree with a judges score anyway. Lewis definatley won the last 2 rounds, the 4th rd was pretty even and thats the swinger in my opinion. Yeah vitali had the first 2. The myth of him winning big on the sccorecards defies the reality of what happened and the damage Lewis systematically round by round was doing to the eye. After rd 3 there was one cut, after round 5 there was now 2 cuts above the eye, one below and gashes in the lips and mouth, at the end of rd 6 vitali was clinging to Lewis`s waist and not throwing or defending himself. The ref was looking very closely at vitali`s face from the point of the 6th rd uppercut to the bell and clearly saw matters for concern in him.
I agree that Wladimir is the better of the two. However, why is it hard to understand why a good bit of people would pick Vitali over guys like Ali and Marciano? Let's look at the difference between Vitali and Marciano to break this down in a one on one basis. Remember, this is a head to head match-up, not a ranking system based on accomplishments. Of course, anyone ranking Vitali ahead of Rocky in ATG status has been concussed. Vitali was a very skilled big man, with a very good defense, good power, good speed, and a very good chin. Not only has Marciano never faced an opponent anything like that, there simply wasn't anyone like that around at those times. Let's look at the physical match-up. Vitali Stands at 6'8 1/2", most accounts have him just a hair under 6"9" Has a reach of 80", and remember that is coming from a much taller, and larger fram all together, which makes it even bigger compared to Marciano. Vitali is in great shape at 250 pounds. Marciano 5'10" 68" reach Marciano was in great shape at 185 pounds on average. So, that leaves Vitali with about an 11 inch height advantage, a 12" reach advantage, and a 65lb weight advantage. Marciano would be 15 lbs under the Cruiserweight limit of today, let alone fighting the super heavyweights. Rocky would most likely have been fighting at Light Heavyweight after dropping 10 pounds of water weight rather easily in today's world. That is simply too much of an advantage for Vitali, especially considering how skilled he is for a man of that size. A 185 pound man simply couldn't beat him. Now, that doesn't take away anything from Rocky or his status as an ATG. He was GREAT in his era, and is great in the history of boxing. His accomplishments in his era place him well above Vitali in any ATG list imaginable. However, the simple truth is that he doesn't stack up in a head to head atmosphere. Just too small. BTW, I am a huge Marciano fan. Probably my favorite heavyweight of the past.
Oh, so TKOing Frazier and Norton inside of 2 rounds is worthy of your comment "Who did Foreman beat"?
vitali dosnt have a really good resume .. but the people he did fight ...it was dominateing the way he did it ... so i guess its a split .. i mean he didnt have the worst resume .. but it wasnt no where near all time status
more importantly, why don't you name the fighters from the last 20 years that you think could beat him and why
Neither is Klitschko. Most of the threads that say that are created by hatters for laughs and other hatters take them seriously. Cotto TKO Emile Griffin, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Tommy Hearns, and Pernell Whitaker.
Wouldn't it be cool if Vitali dominated McCline and then just continued a massacre of today's top-ranked heavyweights? (...until he gets injured again)
