I have seen him ranked all over the place other than top 2 with no variation depending on who you ask.

Probably one of more debated all time rankings.

Haven't seen Canelo Trout but I thought Canelo beat Lara 7-5.

Lara had a better case for winning than Trout. Lara ran through the championship rounds though. I think I had the same score.

Canelo has about five times better opposition. Holmes reign was disgraceful.

That being said, I would give Holmes the edge as a fighter.

Really debateful, how many opponents Canelo has beaten with the quality of Norton, Witherspoon and Cooney? They both have their fair share of controversial fights as privileged A-side and the duckin' of opppnents, need to rescore the GG 2 fight but Clenelo never beat him properly imo and basically aged him out.
Canelo been followin' the Holmes blueprint post-Bivol jumping from paycheck to paycheck devourin' unproven opposition.
I got Holmes ahead but this thread made me notice that yeah, the similarities between their careers and paths is making 'em a bit closer than I thought.

Apart from when he knew that he was on the decline near the end of his title reign when he was in his mid 30s and he avoided Thomas, page an a rematch against Witherspoon to cash in while he could ,who did he avoid or do that makes you say that his 20 title defences reign was a disgrace?

I just watched the fight yesterday with some free time on my hands I actually had it 6-6 in rounds but Canelo won because the extra point from the KD. Don't take my word for it I am pretty average at scoring fights but that's how I saw it.

Nobody asked for it at the time. Not even Weaver.

He signed the contract, but the fight fell through.

    When?

Holmes and Foreman nearly happened in 1999 didn't it?

Not surprised to see Marciano there. I tend to see Foreman at 5th most the time because of how highly the 1970s is regarded.

For more casual fans Mike Tyson always shows up but most serious fans don't have him in a top 5.

Holmes' refusal to move down is hard to overlook.

Marciano is my #5 too. He doesn't have the longevity of dominance/reign of Holmes or depth of win resume of Lewis, but iirc, other than Louis and Ali, he has more wins over the highest ranked HW in the world aside from himself, in history.

I forget Marciano's career was only 8 years long and he took up boxing quite late. Very impressive he did all that in such a short period of time we can play the what if's game for sure but he could have definitely done even more. I think if he stayed he would have defended till he ran into Liston which would have been risky but obviously he wanted to go out on a high.
