Burley gives him the toughest fight...maybe beats him on a given night. Maybe...

Not Henry Armstrong whom I saw Ray Robinson go easy on the 31 year old Armstrong
in 1943. Ray played with ole Henry.
The best shots to defeat Robinbson are:
    Tommy Ryan/ Barbados Joe Walcott
    Jack Britton
    Ted Kid Lewis
    WW Mickey Walker

Hearns would be my pick. Also, Duran isnt a bad shout. But he should be favourite against everyone at 147.

same cant be said for Middleweight tho

Burley wouldn't, he'd just get beat to the punch time and again, looking to counter punch but getting peppered with shots for his trouble. Walker at WW wasn't primed and probably not that amazing otherwise he wouldn't have those losses and he's bringing the fight to Robinson, which plays into his hands.

Hearns chin probably isn't holding out but if it did I can see him outboxing Robinson. Leonard has the speed but his defense imo isn't up to scratch to beat Robinson

But hey Duran deserves a mention....seriously though he's 1 of the most skilled and highest tempo fighters at the weight and Robinson would fight him in range, still doubt he wins a series and not sure he wins at all

I think someone really tricky maybe the best foil for Robby, maybe someone like Curry, Rodriguez or Whitaker could edge out a decision, again I'm not favouring them but exploiting Robinson's not so great defense and keeping his connect percentage down is probably the best foil to beat him

I don't make anybody the favorite but Hearns would do well just like you stated. It probably ends just like you stated as well.

Ray Leonard is a problem for anybody at WW as well. I see Robinson winning a close, maybe SD, over Leonard.

What if a prime Robinson (pre-Turpin) took on Marvin Hagler? Robinson beat plenty of MWs before losing to Turpin. What people sometimes fail to understand is that Robinson beat over 50 MWs before facing Turpin, Basilio, Fullmer, etc. He even beat several guys over the MW limit. Even a prime Robinson could handle MW. So, when you look at this fight don't think about the Robinson that lost to Turpin, Basilio, Fullmer, Maxim, etc. Robinson was a MW years before these fights. He'd be about the size of a MW Hopkins. Very lean, closer to JMW... about 2" shorter though. Who wins this?

Burley would have great success distance boxing with him. Every reason to believe that at WW prime with good hands he was just as fast and dynamic as robinson. And harder hitting with single shots.

gavilan has the best shout since he arguably did beat him.

but on paper you can put ray against anyone at 147 and you'd expect him to win.

I am a fan of Burley but I think Robinson was clearly better.

Burley was never stopped in 98 pro fights despite fighting good punchers like Ezzard Charles x3 and Archie Moore.

Robinson was only stopped once in 200 fights... the Joey Maxim fight and we all know that story I hope.

Burley went 2-1 vs. Fritzie Zivic, beat and drew with Cocoa Kid, went 3-3 1NC vs. Holman Williams, lost to Jimmy Bivins, lost twice to Ezzard Charles, lost to Lloyd Marshall, he also beat Archie Moore, Jimmy Leto, Georgie Abrams, Shorty Hogue, and Jackie Burke among others.

Is he really the best fighter to have never won a world title? Was he the best to never fight for a world title?

Jimmy Bivins, Holman Williams, and Lloyd Marshall were never world champions. They never had world title shots either.

Anyway, he wasn't ducked by SRR and I doubt he could have beat him.

I would pick Thomas Hearns and Ray Leonard to take at least 5/10.
From watching footage of Robinson he shows a tendancy to fight when he should box. This will hurt him against Hearns and Leonard. Also because of this If I was a betting man I'd take the odds on Whitaker and Mayweather. Not that I would expect them to win, but style and method equals result.
Robinson has all the skills to beat anyone at 147. Anyone. However if you don't use your assits they are abousulity useless. Like I stateted Robinson fights when he should box. If he boxes he wins at least 8/10 if 10/10 from anyone at 147. If he fights and I think he would he is vrounable.

Prime WW Robinson? Im wrecking my brain trying to think of anyone who gives him a good go and the only one i can think of is Leonard. Its not inconceivable for him to win 1 outta 3, of which he holds his own in the 3.
Regardless of what some say on this forum about his underhanded ways and cherrypicking, no doubt the guy could fight
