Who takes the higher spot in your heavyweight top guys?
    The man who retired unbeaten?
Or the guy who became the first to whip Ali?

I sometimes go back and fourth between the two, but I think Smoking Joe's superior resume gets him a higher ranking.

    Frazier.

I dunno if I'd pick him to beat Marciano, but in some form of round robin vs all top heavyweights, I'd pick Frazier to beat some major players who I wouldn't give Marciano a hope against. That, and looking at the pair of them on film, it's blatant that Frazier is clearly the better fighter. If Marciano beats him, it's due to styles, nothing more.

But I don't like H2H when talking rankings.

I'll take wins over Ali, Quarry, Ellis, Mathis, Chuvalo, Bonavena, Bugner, Foster, (old) Machen &c; over wins vs: (old) Walcott, (old) Charles, (old) Moore and (prime) Layne. Frazier also made a title defence or two more IIRC. Marcianoa also did about as much as he could, he beat everyone I'm his era aside from one man, who he beat the guy who beat him, whereas Frazier could have picked up a couple more impressive scalps; (older) Liston, Norton, Young, (younger) Holmes, Shavers, Lyle,

    Smokin' Joe.

    1. Both in there pomp, I'd back him to beat Marciano
    2. He has the better resume and beat more fighters who were in there prime themselves whilst Marciano, not knocking him, but a lot of the top fighters he faced were on the slide.

As do I. Maybe I'm wrong but I can't see Rocky beating Ali from FOTC. And I see Joe beating Marciano s oppenents 49 - 0.

There's an argument for both but Fraziers win over Ali outweighs any argument in favor of Marciano imo. H2h I think one of them may not come out of the fight alive

Joe. His ceiling was higher but Marciano had a more consistent, tho shorter, career.

I’m one of the few who rank Marciano higher than Joe Frazier. Yes I know Frazier’s win over Muhammad Ali was better than any of Rockys wins. Joe was an Olympic gold medalist and Rocky wasn’t. And head to head Rocky losing to Frazier is certainly possible. But I think Marciano’s 49-0 record is a feat truly unique to the heavyweight division and it’s history along with his impressive KO percentage. I don’t have a problem with people who rate these two contrarily to myself.

Taking Marciano. Men of the time who were close to both fighters pick Marciano to be the better. But realistically they’re pretty damn close in a lot of areas. Defense, offense, stamina etc

Rocky Marciano won a lineal title in 1952, stopping champion Jersey Joe Walcott in the 13 th round. Joe Frazier won a five state title on March 4 1968, stopping Buster Mathis, this after Muhammad Ali was stripped of his title and lost his license to box, after refusing to submit to the selective service at the height of his career in 1967. Joe claimed the WBA title on Feb 16 1970 with a TKO 5 over Jimmy Ellis. Joe had tile defenses of his lineal won title against the likes of Bob Foster in 1970, a come backing Muhammad Ali, in 1971, that only had 2 fights in 3 and a half years, Terry Daniels, Ron Stander, both in 1972, then unsuccessfully against George Foreman in 1973. Rocky had title defenses against Jersey Joe Walcott and Roland La Starza in 1953. Then the two bouts against Ezzard Charles in 1954, then the last two in 1955 against Don Cockell and Archie Moore . A fighter can only fight what opponents are put in front of him and of his respective era. After Joe fought Ali, he did not engage in any dangerous fights as champion, Rocky did. Also Marciano did have fragile skin but he continued until his retirement as champion in 1956, 49-0, 43 KO's. Both were great fighters with similar styles, but as champion, Rocky had longevity on his side.

Greater is debatable, but what's not debatable IMO is H2H.

69-71 Frazier would have wrecked Marciano.
