Who do you rank higher all-time p4p: THOMAS HEARNS or JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ?

    That's true.

That's also true. There's no necessary connection between having a more glaring weakness and being a lesser fighter. But the whole issue is, does the weakness lend itself to making the fighter more beatable, and that's the issue we are discussing here really.

Personally, I think Hearns has a better chin that he is generally given credit for, but I do think great hitters will always be a chance to take him out.

The difficulty in analysing the difference between Hearns and Chavez is that they are better than each other in different areas. E.g. Chavez will never be knocked out by a 'dangerous' opponent, but Chavez will also never outbox a Pernell Whitaker (I'm assuming here that a prime Hearns would).

Here's an interesting question. Assuming they are the same weight, who wins a fight between the two? I'm inclined to say Chavez if it's over 15 rounds.

I was going to make my case for Chavez and how unpopular that would probably be but the poll happens to agreed with my thinking-go figure.

It's very close. Don't want to say... Anyone not voting for one of the 'slight edge' options is kidding themselves.

I'd pick Chavez, but it's close.

You beat me to it, Pea.

Randall also poses a style threat to Chavez, similar to the way Barkley does Hearns. Randall and Barkley have very different fighting styles, but they are near perfect foils for these two men.

Randall was technically better than Barkley. His balance was sounder and he was a more 'authoritive' well rounded boxer. Barkley took risks and was an effective hooker. His style was always dangerous as he liked to constantly put on pressure. Barkley's style really gave problems to Hearns throughout the rematch. He sapped Hearns' stamina with his inside fighting.

Good posts here. I wasn't sure at first but upon reading the thread and thinking about it, I'd take Hearns by a slight edge.

This is hard. Considering that Hearns had fought better competition than Chavez and is a champion in five weight classes as opposed to his four, I might lean towards Hearns. On the other hand, Chavez has an incredible win streak including great wins such as Mayweather, Taylor(2x), Camacho and Haugen. Avenged his loss to Randall.

Hearns is slightly better P4P in my opinion.

Tommy by a slight edge for me, for the reasons mentioned in above posts. Also because Chavez never did something of the nature of what Hearns did to Duran and Cuevas.

Yes ,Randall 's career stalled owing to substance abuse ,but his wins over Rosario,Chavez,Coggi,Moore,Pendleton, and Fuentes ,compare quite favourably with Barkley's imo.I exclude both men's later records when they were patently shot fighters competing above their optimum weights.
