Who do you rank higher all-time pound-for-pound: NASEEM HAMED or FERNANDO VARGAS?

Every now and then, I think of two fighters that I find it very difficult to separate in all-time pound-for-pound terms. Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis are such a pair, as are Felix Trinidad and Joe Calzaghe, and Shane Mosley and Winky Wright.

Now, I'm thinking of Vargas and Hamed. Similar careers. Both promised the world and then bombed after they had been confronted by a superior fighter. To Vargas's credit, he battled on after having his invincibility shattered, whereas Hamed did not. Hamed has the better record and achieved more, but Vargas fought far far better opposition (Trinidad, De La Hoya, Mosley) and beat far better opposition (Wright, Quartey).

How do you rate higher in pound-for-pound terms?

    FERNANDO VARGAS
    Record: 26-5(22)
World titles: IBF & WBA lightmiddleweight
Top 5 wins: Winky Wright, Ike Quartey, Raul Marquez, Yori Boy Campas, Javier Castillejo
His demise: After promising to be one of the best fighters in the world, he took on and lost to two of the best fighters of his generation, Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya. He was never the same after those losses but fought on bravely for another couple of years.

    NASEEM HAMED
    Record: 36-1(31)
    World titles: WBC,IBF,WBO featherweight
Top 5 wins: Vuyani Bungu, Kevin Kelley, Tom Johnson, Manuel Medina, Wilfredo Vasquez
His demise: Hamed looked sensational early in his world championship career smashing in tomato cans, but his limitations and his over-reliance on power began to show as his career progressed, and the very first time he fought a great opponent, Marco Antonio Barrera, he was cruelly exposed. He retired not long after.

Vargas: Fought the higher level of competition and was the all around better man.

Interesting, I would go with Hamed.

Vergas fought the better comp but he also lost brutally aswel. Hamed had more succesful title fights and was essentially the Undisputed Champion of his division, Vargas was a 2 time belt holder.

He did lose to Tito and Oscar brutally, he gave them all they could handle though.

I think Vargas is typical of mis management or he was too brave for his own good. I think with some clever managment Vargas' peak would have been longer.

But then again he did win world titles and had some big million dollar matches so you cant ask for much more, but I still think he was rushed, much like Reid, Lacy, Norris, Davey Moore etc... I in fact expect Gamboa to go the same way, there was talk of him getting a world title shot already...:(

Why is Hamed running away with the vote but no-one who has voted him has commented to explain why????

    for me its obvious.

Also, i don't see where Hamed was ''Cruelly exposed by Marco Antonio Barrera'' He lost a fight to an absolute prime version of an ATG fighter, when he himself was no longer at the top of his game. He didn't get shutout, he didn't get ktfo, he just lost. Cruelly exposed? reaks of bias.

Hamed was a dominant champion over a very long period of time.

Naz, I feel that he performed at a higher level. Achived more by as yer man said basically cleaning up a divison. Where as Vargas did not.
