Who do you rank higher all-time pound-for-pound: NASEEM HAMED or FERNANDO VARGAS?

Yeah I know. I watched Hamed from very early on in his career, he could have stayed at a lower weight for longer than he did.

Gotta go with the prince.... he was superior when both were at their peaks, was never KOd at all never mind several times & badly at that & Naz will rank higher in all time 122 & 126 lb classes than Vargas will at 154 etc IMO.

Vargas did fight the better level of opposition on more ocassions but usually lost decisively + I heard he got a gift vs Wright which is possibly his biggest win.

I hated the way Naz never came back & lost heart & I deduct him points for such shamefull behaviour but he is still better than Vargas IMO.

Vargas got off the deck against Tito several times and knocked Tito down. Tito then bitched out by throwing a few uppercuts to Vargas' family jewels and it was over.

    good topic.

i go with vargas because he was carved out of wood and never gave up.

he definitely has better opposition too - even after he got beat he always came back with a passion. naseem folded fast despite his talent and 'fan appeal'.

    Vargas easily.

Nas nearly got done in by Kelley...then got beaten like a C level fighter by Barrera.

Vargas nearly beat Tito and there were moments in the DLH fight I thought he could overpower him...weird fight actually.

Exactly how I remember it....Hamed was Warrens 'little Calslappy', your description of his victims reads just like Calslappys career to date.

The thing that stuck out a mile in the Barrera fight for me was that Hamed couldn't handle a guy that wasn't scared of him, had a great chin and threw combinations, Barrera had obviously seen this flaw because when you watch it he'd often throw a meaningless punch which Hameds reflexes could cope with and then he'd follow it up with 4 or 5 meaningful punches, most of which hit the target. That's what won Barrera the fight in my opinion - and that's the difference between Hamed and Ali, Ali would dodge all 5 of those punches whereas Hamed only saw the first one and caught the rest.

Exposed is the correct word yes - and Vargas was a greater fighter than Hamed but unfortunately for him he had the nuts to take the best fighters on at too early an age and ended up shot before he was 30. Shame but nice to see he's getting his due respect in this thread.

Pretty much. Many believe Vargas had a chance of winning that fight.

It's funny how nobody mentions Vargas low blows in that fight, and though Vargas was able to outbox Tito in the middle rounds he was still getting hit flush in those rounds so Tito and Vargas can fight 10 times and Vargas would lose all ten times, deal with it.

This is a very good thread by the way. Hamed is the better pfp fighter who beat the better comp. Vargas in many people's eyes did not beat Wright. Vargas and David Reid imo were very skilled amateurs who never learned the true art of fighting. When thrown in with an experienced fighter in Tito, they both crumbled. They made some noise, but they crumbled. Hamed lost one fight, and in that fight people thought he was exposed. This could be true, but going in, I remember Hamed saying he wanted Morales. Hamed also said that Barrera is a big guy. On other forums, I said Barrera would have the longer reach, and that he would make Hamed look small even though they were the same weight. Hamed got outboxed, and a bit exposed. Simple as that. Vargas best win was against Wright, and if you didn't think he beat Wright, you can say Quartey. After that, Vargas's comp of who he beat is a notch below the comp Hamed beat.

If you put a poll and expect real answers then try to be a little less biased...

When Vargas lost to Trinidad he "lost to one of the best fighters of his generation".

When Naseem lost to Barrera he "he was cruelly exposed".

Is Trinidad a better fighter than Barrera? I doubt it. Yet, Hamed was exposed while Vargas fought bravely on. Pure biased rubbish.:patsch

Hamed overall. Ignored JMM but unified a division. Vargas has the better single win vs Wright, however more ppl than not seemed to think he lost a close decison there. The performance vs Trinidad was outstanding especially after the horrible start & Quartey was over the hill.

...people seem to have forgotten Vargas only did as well as he did vs De La Hotti because he was on f'ckin roids:lol:.
